Default Damage to timing gear, possible problem?

Something got sucked up into my engine bay while cruising this weekend and lodged itself between my crank sensor bolt and the 36-2 timing gear. It scored and put a lip on the falling side of the teeth (only a small one, talking half a mm or smaller) so we opted to softly file said lip off each of the affected teeth. The car seems to run alright right now, but is this something that could cause a problem?
