Default I got VVT Working !!!!

A little background for those that don't know. my car is a 96 with a 01. I tried getting it running with the 01 sensors so I could go PID VVT control. that didn't happen. so I decided to run the PNP harness and open loop VVT control. well I have had issues with that too. But now its all working great.

…. I GOT VVT WORKING!!!! WOOT!!!!

It was a ground issue the whole time. there is a 6 pin plug with 4 outputs and 2 grounds. I traced the wiring back and I had the right wires. But when I checked the plug, only one of the two grounds was working. So I tied them together, went for a drive to try it, VVT BABY!!!

I knew it would be something simple once I figured it out. I been trying to chase it down on the laptop forever, and I finally realized it must be a problem at the solenoid. 10 minutes with a $3 test light and problem solved.

And I am proud of myself for this little trick I figured out. Rather than use the open loop VVT function based on RPM, which would advance the cam at a given RPM regardless of load, I used the wastegate output. It’s meant for turbo’s, but since I don’t have one…. it allows me to set VVT (or duty cycle) based on RPM, but also has a minimum TPS and Min MAP settings. So it will only advance the cam at full load. I set for >50% TPS and >90kpa MAP.

When I first stomped the gas out of the neighborhood it was obvious. Whoa, amazing!!!

Now I can’t wait to put a loud shorty exhaust on the car and get back to the dyno and dial it in again.

What settings are you using? I still have mine disabled because I don't know what I'm doing.

Its working in open loop off the wastegate output. Duty cycle per RPM, and min is 50% TPS and 90kpa so it only comes on on load. However I think I may drop the kpa down to about 60 so that it will stay engaged in slolams and such. the main thing I want is for it to not advance while moving around in grid and cruising and such.

Here is a screen shot of the setup. If you set all the PID values to 0 it goes open loop. And I am feeding it 12V, 3A, at 250Hz. nothing really happens until ~ 60% duty cycle. so its coming on at 2500 , full advance 3000-4500, then tapering off at 5000.

So what do you guys think are the right Min TPS and Min MAP to put in to keep VVT off duiring highway cruising, but stay on during slolams and such at the autocross?

I don't think using TPS as a variable is what you need - just set it so that it advances when you go over 70 or 75kpa.

I set it at 25% TPS and 60kPa min's. that seems to be working great. I can cruise at 80mph on the interstate without it kicking in. it only kick's in when passing and such.

also, note the TPS X DC. That will ramp the load when applying throttle, so it doesn't og rapid advance (unless I am at 3500 and just hammer it)

Working great so far, I am happy. Going to try to get some video this weekend. FYI car sounds awesome too.
