I realize this may sound crazy, but it's ok to have one car that's not a project car.

I know this hasn't been suggested but how about a stock evo 9 turbo. Plenty of upgrade paths to be had and used they are dirt cheap. Requires a twin scroll manifold but spool is great and they make great power up top still. Just a thought.

Comanche info:
Only made from 85-92 (total of 190k ever made 0.o). You only want an 87 or newer as they didn't come with the 4.0 before then (except the unicorn turbo diesel 4cyl which only came in 86/87, if you can find one that isn't a $million I'll buy it)

Motor: If it doesn't have the 4.0, you don't want it.
The comanche only came with the older non HO 4.0. It's a fine motor and it will last forever (180k on the one in mine).
You can swap in the HO 4.0 from "newer" cherokees, but you'd be better off with boost or the hybrid 4.2l mod (that deserves it's own thread).

Transmission:
The AW-4 auto is ok
The Peugeot BA-10 5 speed is garbage
The AX-15 5 speed is ok, and would only come in the 90/91 comanche
The NV3550 5 speed it pretty good, but it only came in newer (2000's) cherokees

Front axle:
All you get is a Dana 30 high pinion. It's ok, not great.

Rear axle: (has wider spacing on the axle pads than the cherokee)
Dana 35 (most likely), not great with anything bigger than 31's but cheap!
Dana 44 (pretty rare), hold up well, but are worth a pretty penny
Chrysler 8.25, came in new cherokees, not as good as the 44 better than the 35 and can be found cheap. Would need axle pads moved.

My parents want to go to some hot springs over christmas break, so I may call it good on the exofish/nb for now and start poking at the jeep again

I like your thinking. Twin scroll adds complexity to the manifold, but would be a really fun project.

Schuyler I hate you.

Gesso, thank you.

Buy the commanche.
It's a Cherokee with a bed.
The beds rust horribly, but that shouldn't be a problem for you.
Autos are generally better for wheeling. Later years have a higher spline output to the transfer case.
Aisin made the transmissions for jeep, Toyota, and dodge, so the swap/upgrade possibilities are limited mostly by your imagination.

That one is right near me. Probably within 5 miles of my house.

I don't really know MJs beyond they're mostly same-ish as XJs. But they're the older version of everything.

Not to correct Gesso directly, but i'm not aware of XJs coming with the nv3550. My facelift cherokee had an AX15.

2manyhobbyz uses a really cool setup such as this.
It's not bad, but probably along the same lines as a holset. It's a 400hp turbo (the IX one, anyway) that will probably hit hard around 4500 on a BP. The selection of similar mitsu turbos that you could replace with would also be pretty decent

but if you only run 4psi on the track, why not just get something huge for doing stupid things on the street, and a big ol EWG to bleed ALLOFIT off at the track and have a basically n/a powerband?

if I was doing weird experimental things, that's what I'd try

Nv3550 didn't appear in jeeps until 2000.
It was found in some dodge and GM light trucks though.

Not enough points on his license to do stupid things on the street.

Makes perfect sense:
"I want to build a high hp setup so I can never use it on the street and run none of it on the track"

el oh ellz

bowing out now

I am also confused by this. How much power do you actually want from your setup?
I get the desire for fast response, but wouldn't a 2554 be perfect for that?
I've got a really nice one I will make you a deal on.

Future drag racing. I have aspirations of aa ford rear end and a t5.

Also at some point I hope I'm good enough to actually want power on the track.

I want a Comanche bad. New 31's. Limited slip in back, locker in front.

My truck is too nice for real wheeling. I want something more beat up.

I got a couch you can crash on when you come to pick up that Comanche that is close to me.

If it were red. I'd be there soon. Want to go loom at it for me? From the sound of it it doesn't run or drive.

I have an air compressor, HF spray gun, and a friend who works at sherwin williams. I will have it red by the time you get here.

I could go check it out over the next few days, don't know anything about them, but I would go look. Shoot me a pm.

Will do. Looked up shipping quotes and got 2k. Car would need to be running and driving reliably for me to drive it. One can dream I guess.

Prices in the PNW are fucked. One guy wants 1800 for one with 250k and a broken transfer case.
