I was looking at this one

Prusa 8" i3v Kit (V-Slot Extrusion) - 3D Printer Kits

Or its larger 12x12x12 brother

Prusa 12" i3v Kit (V-Slot Extrusion) - 3D Printer Kits

The larger printer volume does make the 12" model very attractive. There is a lot of building support and info out there. Yes it sounds like it will take a day or two to build, but you end up with a nice DIY printer. I wish they had a cheap option for adding a heated box around the printer, especially when printing larger items.

<p>I will stress this again.</p><p>Heated chamber is a&nbsp;<strong>MUST</strong>. You will get **** peeling apart, especially on larger prints.</p><p>If yours doesn't come with one, make one.</p>

I bought a Prusa i3 off amazon, it would be here today if my fedex guy wasn't the largest ******* bitch on the face of the earth.

Stock Prusa is 200x200x180mm IIRC.

You can do a hell of a lot better on price than those prices, though. For the same price you can have a full 80/20 aluminum frame instead of that wood frame junk. I can't ever buy a flat sheet of 1/4" ply from the hardware store, I don't trust that for an accurate frame.

Prusa is original reprap though, I don't think there is anything better to pick from at the price point. It's where it started, it's all open, and it's got more upgrades available than I know what to do with.

e3d V6 full metal hotend with a bowden extruder is going to be my first project, if you can wait for the china slowboat you can get a 200x200 i3 kit with a fake e3d hotend and bowden extruder for $250 shipped.
https://www.3dprintersonlinestore.co...p-prusa-i3-kit

I'm also fairly certain a heated chamber is not required. I didn't know what Aiden was talking about at first, but now I do, and it's not necessary if things are setup right.

<p>I've done prints with and without a heated chamber. Its infinitely more painful, and annoying and whatnot.</p><p>It isn't &quot;required&quot; but will make your life a lot easier.</p>

<p>Its also incredibly easy to build. Heating element, 12v fan, thermoswitch.</p>

I was thinking the same thing till I got to looking harder the other day. Prusa can print fantastic parts, and that hotend I mentioned can print like 1/2" or larger bridges and other ridiculousness.

I was planning on nailing mine to a plank of MDF, maybe formica laminated if I want to splurge, it would be easy to close that in if I wanted.

I think I can make mine pay for itself by printing prototypes for this shop I'm working for, 3d printer prints plasma cutter?

Nah, I'll be lucky to make it pay for itself, but new toy!

What style printer were you using for these GPS doodads?

<p>You should try and print me a case and see if it works. Then I can try and make my money back on it.</p>

I can do that, will print baller black PLA case because that's all I have.

Was it you that had the lame fedex driver too? Do they know you have to knock to see if someone is home? Am I to wait on my porch all day? I'm mad, I want to play with this thing.

I thought they got paid per package, I usually catch stuff in time to divert it to the local store because fedex always does this **** to me. Figure if they can't be bothered to do their job at least they hopefully don't get paid for it.

That place looks tight, I'd rock it. Not very different from where I stay now

FedEx fucked me out of $1500 this year.
I will never use them by choice again.

Such a long story, with so many hair pulling moments.
Condensed version:
FedEx packed and shipped a very expensive piece of machinery I sold on eBay.
FedEx proceeded to do god knows what to said package resulting in $1500 in damage to the machine.
After talking with customer service, I was under the impression that FedEx would be paying for damages, as it was clearly their fault, so I reimbursed the purchaser as I awaited compensation.
Weeks later, I received a letter from FedEx stating that, after reviewing all of the evidence, I was at fault for not packaging the item correctly.
THEY PACKAGED THE ******* THING!
It gets much worse, as there was even a mind-numbing experience with customer service, during which; the woman denied that there was a hole punched in the box caused by what I can only assume to be the forks of a fork-truck. This was despite photographic evidence that included a circle around the motherfucking hole.
I'm going to stop now, because I'm on the verge of a heart attack, but I am eagerly awaiting their response to the better business bureau.
