Hence me asking what the test actually consists of. If I can avoid having an issue all together, then clearly that's ideal. There is no reason to walk blindly into potential issues when I can get input to avoid them entirely.

If you have any sort of cat installed you should be able to tune and pass the roller test. No clue on the gas cap test. In NoVA all the emissions testing spots are at gas stations and such. I would find the most run down one near you and just go there. And say you need to test the car for emissions to decide if you want to switch. See what they do. If they just do rollers and pass, then goto DMV and switch and retest there.

You're over thinking it. Conjuring up a problem when you don't know there's a problem only contributed to more anxiety to fix a problem that may not be a problem in the first place. You can avoid getting insurance involved by avoiding an accident by not driving your car by selling it.

Just go, see what happens and see what is then required to pass. I live in northern VA which is known to be strict as it gets. I'd be pleasantly surprised if md was worse. It's a miracle my car passes everything . Or is it.

Also registered for normal use

I know they do have self test facilities, majority of them here in MD are super strict and closely monitored, I had to pry the guy for info last time about testing OBD1 cars. Im simply trying to get some insight from those who have done it, or have knowledge of it.

Is your car throwing an evaporator code? Nope, it's obd1 and has only 15 generic trouble lights.

Here's how you test a gas gap not the tank. You're going to win.

Just move to this side of the bay we don't have emissions over here. : I've been using my festiva with historic plates as a dd for a year or two now. Been pulled over once or twice but no one has ever said anything about the plates.

Won't work in MD. All testing are essentially government ran, so no "gaming" the system as they are all ran the same.

Downmented, just go in for emissions testing. If it's not throwing a code, it won't be an issue. Alos "The first re-test of a vehicle’s emissions (following repairs) is free if done by the “valid through” date on the VEIC." So your next retest is free if for whatever reason it fails on the gas cap test.

Source: MD resident and have done multiple cars with OBD1 test with all evap removed and no issues on multiple occasions. Latest vehicle was not a Miata, but a turbo 240SX with some turbo Japanese engine in it. They even "allowed" me to tune live while on the dyno to get as best emissions results as I could achieve.

I wouldn't worry about it.

They ONLY test the gas cap itself correct? Like remove it, and test its ability to seal? Or do they actually connect something to the tank fill spot itself?

Yep, pretty much

Below is a quote directly from the VEIP website

The vehicle will fail if the gas cap is missing or leaking, damaged, or the wrong cap for the vehicle.
........None of which is currently an issue with your vehicle, correct?? If not it is not something I would worry about

Well I got my DP back from Bryan, got it back in and no more clearance issues, so much room for activities!!

Ordered all of the hard parts for the fuel system over the weekend, ID1000s, AEM FPR, AEM flex fuel sensor, DW in line 110mm 10micron fuel filter. Once I have everything in hand, I will figure out where I am mounting it all, then figure out what fittings I need, then its all easy peasy from there.

Whats left-
-Intercooler
-Brake/ clutch lines
-Racepak iq3 install

All the clearance!!

It seriously looks like it DP was just hit with a hammer to clear. Also hope that when engine shakes that it does not still hit. Looks like it won't, but who knows.

He said he heated it up then put it into a press, realistically even if he hit it with a hammer, it still did exactly what I needed it to do, the method does not matter too much.
