Going to file off the threads and try and run it for now if I can get it out. Will order a new axle.

Right answer. Rear axle and rear wheel bearings are the one thing I take to a shop. Let them deal with it with an enormous press. I always hear about what a PITA it was from them and smile on the inside. On reassembly, use anti-seize and the axle will come out of the upright with ease next time.

Is your hub cracked?

No idea. These are off the auction car. Shop is gonna pop em out, I'm going to dremel off some threads and run em. Its not like on my truck where the axle holds the wheel on.

Welcome to the world of wrecked cars.

So, that cast part is actually cracked eh? Wow.

You can see all the way through the diff right, looking in through the axle holes? I can't remember what mine looks like, got it back from the diff shop yesterday and still can't remember what it looks like

Depending on how much you hate yourself, I have an NB diff housing with no gears in it under my workbench.

Such breakage, many sucks, wow.

I too have an unbroken diff housing. I dont want to deal with pinion nut stuff though. I'm not horribly worried about it. Worst case scenario is loss of power? Its not brakes or anything.

Swapping the aluminum housings is easy peasy. Swapping the iron housing is messed up.

Also: that's weird, I look into my axle holes and it's a hole straight through clear as day.

Honestly looks like the majority of the bolt will still have some positive retention, I don't think that really stands much chance of being a problem

Hope so. Also apparently type 1 and 2 use different cast pieces where mine broke. Hopefully they are similar sized.

The axle does help keep the hub from coming out of the bearing in the knuckle though.
