Default Ricer redneck build '96 miata

Howdy gang,
I am fairly new to the forum.. Atleast posting wise, so I am just going to spill it. 23 year old from southwest virginia. All my friends and a majority of the population here have wrxs, or mustangs. Im so sick of their big heads and tiny you know whats drivng like they can whoop lambos. Its a 03 gt bro dont rev your bunjed up exhaust at me. So its time, all the haters say I need "internals" or just got 1jz. These dumb dumbs dont realize these cars were made for boost.. Smh. So im on a budget of 1200 or so dollars to boost my 96 1.8 manual. Already done brakes, timing belt, vc gaskef, plugs, wires, brakes and bearings all myself... Big deal.. Not. Imnm not going to lie I am somewhat of a noob and need a lot of advice and Ill listen to any opinons. Im getting wideband aem Friday too. Next step? Really dont want to run ms

Either get MS or don't boost it.

If your budget is $1200 and you are asking what is next, you don't have enough knowledge to be able to build a turbo car for that budget.

As far as not going MS? It can be done. Having helped my friend get his car running on piggy backs (bought that way) I would go stand alone any day of the week over that. Did it work? Yeah, kept the car from blowing up. Never ending mess of guessing and running problems though.

My friend is going to squeak in at under 5k for car, upgrades and everything, but he got a screaming deal on a good chunk of things.

Yes I am asking whats next. I am obviously a noob. so take your dick pump off and quit trying to one somebody up. I joined this thread to escape negativity. Anyways, Do I focus on the intercooler next or just finding good prices on manifold and turbo? and worry about inter cooler fitment after? And yes Im fighting nail and tooth to get MS. 1. its really expensive, I would have to get a new laptop etc. 2. Im not that computer literate especially with mapping etc. So im thinking FMU to get that high rich load under boost. What was yous guys next step after wideband? and I cant do it under 1200? this is the reason im boosting to prove haters like you Im wrong, and itll be reliable. Thank you Boosted Redneck

Take it easy dude. Your original post would have had detrimental effects, a year ago. Nobody is dick pumping you.

Ms1 is completely and totally unsupported. It is obsolete. Ms2 is the minimum. Find one used for a good price savings. If you can't afford a $125 laptop from Wall-Mart to run ms, then you absolutely cannot afford to replace an engine. Engine replacement would come in turn, because of a bad tune and wanting to turbo before you were ready.

You will not get one single person on this site, to agree that an FMU is a good idea. Not one. The budget you stated ($1,200) is not reality. Certainly not for a first time build. Take some time and go read through some builds. It will take a few months to really understand them. Based on your original post, you don't really know anything about a proper turbo system. So take the time to read and learn. Buy parts later.

Once again, it goes like this:

1. Go read some build threads.
2. Install Ms and learn to tune
3. Read more threads and start to figure out your end goal. Type of Use, power level, etc.
4. Install injectors, re tune. This is important. No you cannot use stock injectors for boost.
5. Keep reading build threads. See where people had problems, note them. See what worked well, note that stuFF too.
6. Start searching the classifieds for sweet deals, now that you have a better idea of what you need.
7. You see a pattern here? Continue with it.

Negative cats will have a severe impact on the type and quantity of help you will receive on this site. Smooth your feathers, your the new rooster in this cockhouse.

@Ryansmoneypit thank you for being down to earth and somewhat easy on a youngster. Im not the typically dick head that gets on here and acts like I know everything or wants hand outs. Im not a retard but im deff not a master mechanic. But Im fighting MS man. But I am seeing my budget is off, so i bumped it to 2 grand to be safe. But the steps you have given seem like its for a 1.6. The car passion channel literally stated the same thing. And trust me brother I have been reading threads for months, Just ready to dip my toe in the pool then jump in. Once again thank you for being down to earth.

Or just drive up an hour and half, buy ryan a bunch of beer and pick his brain in person.

edit: this response was submitted late so it's out of context

I kinda like this redneck charm. If I'm ever back down at Tech for work collaboration , I'll drop in to check your progress lol.

Either way, to turbo these things reliably, you're going to have to invest a little. Nothing is worse than trying to save a little here and there to only do it again. I'd recommend an MKTurbo kit, megasquirt and decent injectors. After that you'll just be replacing the parts that don't keep up.

Those were instructions specific to the 1.8.
Greg at the passion channel has been working with turbo systems for a very long time. That's why he makes it look easy. More than likely it will not work out well for you.

The fact that you think I gave you instructions for a 1.6 build, just helps solidify the thought that you know even less than originally indicated. Reading my build thread would take you probably 5 hours. Even more to fully understand it. That's just one thread, and mine isn't even that good, but you will see the frustration I encountered with my DIY approach. I am skeptical that you have anything more than. Three hours of actual reading. Reading not skimming through looking at pictures and a few related sentences.

^this.

I, for one, learned by doing and failing and researching along the way to try to fix my mistakes. It sucks. Definitely have a second car on hand.
