Default Adam's DIY TURBO Silver NB Boooost

Ok, so it's not quite turbo'd yet, but it will be in the near future. I just need to get my last FSAE competition out of the way. I'm currently Chief Engineer and Lead Suspension Designer for Kettering Formula SAE. I've done too much chassis **** the past three years, it's finally time for me to try out some powertrain magic!

I have a 1999 Leather Package NB Miata. It's not quite a leather package anymore... since it no longer has power steering, BOSE, or.. leather for that matter. I have a lot of little things done here and there, but the jist of it is this:

SSR Competitions 16x7 with Michelin PE2's
MSM Billies, revalved, with 500x375 springs
Kirkey Pro Street Drag (yes this is my daily driving seat)
MR tall angled shifter
JR Header
2.5" midpipe with summit glasspack
Roadstersport3 muffler
MS2/Enhanced (Brain built, I believe)
Short MAF deleted cold side intake
Brake refresh with Hawk HPS and SS lines(will be replacing pads.. or little big brake kit)
HDHCHTDDM2
I'm probably forgetting some stuff

I also have a TD04-20t from a Caliber SRT4 waiting to be used. It seems to match pretty well all across the pressure ratio range, and be able to hold a lot of boost efficiently for when I build the motor. I'll be fabbing the manifold and 3" downpipe, then fab a 3" exhaust in the future. I'll also be fabbing all the intercooler piping for the CXRacing universal kit. Just placed my order with Flyin' Miata on a Stage 1 Happy Meal clutch and 10lb flywheel kit! My next purchase will be either ID725 or ID1000 injectors. I haven't decided yet if I'll go E85 or not, but I probably will end up going for it.

I don't have much to show for yet, but at least it's a start! And I can use this to make sure I don't make any blatant errors, since this is my first time piecing together a turbo setup.

Which flange is on that td04? Subaru, DSM, or mystery meat.

I'm actually not sure, it's a weird 5-bolt flange. I'll snap a picture tonight. I have the stock manifold and downpipe, so I'll just chop the flanges off, and mill them flat.

I thought the SRT-4 turbo was permanently attatched to the manifold??? Thats what it looked like... at least on the Neon SRT

Maybe.

If you do need a turbine housing to go with that turbo. This would be the one I would pick. Its bigger than the normal housings so it'll be a better match to the 20t comp wheel. I believe the srt4 has the HL wheel so it should just bolt right onto the turbo. And then use weird *** volvo flanges. There's also a couple T25 EWG options as well.

The NSRT4 was a reverse spinning turbo with the turbine housing integrated into the exhaust manifold, but the CSRT4 turbo is a standard design.

I'm still not sure how I want to orient the turbo. Side mount puts the compressor outlet into the sky, top mount puts the outlet into the engine. Bottom mount seems like the way to go, but then the turbo is upside down. So, I'm thinking side mount with clocking the compressor housing 180 degrees, thus routing the compressor outlet downward. I do intend to run an external wastegate, so relocating the internal gate mount isn't an issue. I probably don't need to run an external, but I'm super excited to fab the downpipe and manifold with an external, so screw it! haha. Plus, I just found a Tial external local for a good deal.

Dude, the turbine housing helps you so ******* much if you side mount. Just buy a set of monster sized snap ring pliers from mcmaster and clock the compressor.

I'm definitely seeing that now haha. Good thing we have more snap ring pliers at the FSAE shop than anyone could ever need. Side mount should also play nice with retaining AC.

I'm debating slapping on this turbine housing.

Just trying to gather some thoughts. It's a 0.61 A/R, which will help spool over the current 0.81 A/R, and it's externally gated, as well as a more common T25 flange. The one you have linked has a 0.49 A/R which seems pretty low for a 1.8. I'm pretty new to this, so correct me if this doesn't make sense.

I'm really try to do this on a budget, so maybe I should just leave it be. But if it's worthwhile I'm definitely not against spending a bit more.

FM Happy Meal should be here tomorrow!

8.5cm is a massive housing for a td04. The biggest I've ever heard of. 6cm is the standard size, its whats on my 2.5 liter wrx.

It seems that the CSRT4 turbo has an 11cm^2 housing.. td04's go from 6-12cm^2.

Why does the actual nozzle size matter, isn't it all about the A/R which defines the pressure drop across the wheel?

HORRY **** 11cm is a monster for the td04. Most of them are 6mm, the biggest I've seen is a volvo 5 cylinder one that was 7mm. 11cm is bigger than pretty much all td06's.

After looking around, I see that 6cm is definitely the common housing. Weird that the CSRT4 housing is so huge! Apparently that housing is good to 400 hp lol.

I just realized this thread is missing something important..

My kitty loves my Kirkey

Lol what? What turbo are they sticking in that housing, even a billet 20t wheel in a td04 is not big enough to support that. They must be sticking jamming a td05-20g chara in the stock turbine housing.

I have the 6cm external wastegate housing on the way. I also now have ID1000's, coolant reroute parts, and Toyota COP parts on their way.

A/R is Area (nozzle size) / Radius...

how does that define pressure drop?

Measuring the exhaust pressure before and after the turbo would define pressure drop.

Right, I worded that badly. Obviously there are several other factors that define the actual pressure drop. I guess one question I have that may help my thinking is, you have two turbos with the same compressor housings and wheels, the turbine wheels are the same. If the turbine nozzle is different, but maintains the same A/R, how will that affect the characteristics?

I see often that an A/R on one turbo (say a TD04) behaves similar to a different A/R on another turbo (like a Garrett). Is that because of the different nozzle areas that the two turbine housings have?

No real updates to the Miata yet, but I did just bring home a 10th place trophy from FSAE Lincoln! We also won fuel efficiency (we're pretty confident we have the most fuel efficient FSAE/FS car in the world), second in cost, and we also won the Nucor Pay for Performance award (total event points divided by cost).

Now that the last competition is out of the way for the season, time to give a little attention to the Miata
