Default 1991 Mazda Miata BRG - $6000

Category: Import
Status: Clean Title

I have a 1991 Mazda Miata BRG for sale, in USA - New Jersey.

Mileage: 102500 miles
Engine Size: 1.6L

Asking price is $6000

Seller Information: Scott Ring
Phone:
Email: Scott.M.Ring@gmail.com

I have falling on some bad luck with cars recently and have decided that I need to thin the herd. Up for sale is my 1991 Mazda Miata BRG Special Edition. 4000 of these cars were made with British Racing Green paint and tan interior. I bought this car off a reputable local Miata mechanic and have had no reliability issues with it. I have owned it for a bit over 2 years now and have put on 2k miles tops. The car is garaged year round and never sees the rain.

The car currently runs well with the exception of the Idle Stabilizer Valve which is now plugged (described below). It idles well at 1k RPMs. The previous owner removed the AC and PS. It holds 7-8 psi to redline off the wastegate actuator, I had it running up to 14 psi at one point until the old actuator crapped out on me. As it sits I’d say it has ~150ish whp, with it up to 14 psi it was probably around 200-210 whp (felt much quicker than my e46 M3). The car is rather comfortable to drive for such a modified car, even without PS.

I’m asking $6000 for the car and any parts I have for it. The only trades I’m interested in at this time are a pre-73 BMW 2002, Porsche 914 or a Triumph TR6. If you’re serious about a purchase please email me at Scott.M.Ring@gmail.com

The car has the following modifications:

Tokico Illumina shocks with dampening adjustability
Ground Control adjustable coilovers (425f/300r)
Chaparral 15×7 wheels
Toyo T1-R 205/50 tires with ~2k on them
HardDog Hardcore 4 point roll bar (harnes bar removed for seat adjustment)
TurboTim tubular exhaust manifold and downpipe (same guy that makes Absurdflow products)
Chinacharger from Begi – 725/728 water cooled
eBay intercooler with custom piping
TIAL 50mm BOV
RX-7 550cc injectors, cleaned and balanced 1k ago
MSPnP 9093 – pre-built Megasquirt unit for the 1.6l motors
Innovate LC-1 wideband with XD-16 guage
Flyin’ Miata Turbo Dual Exhaust
Oldschool Momo steering wheel with Momo hub

What it comes with that’s not installed:
“Stein” frame rails to stiffen up the frame and get rid of the dreaded cowl shake all these Miatas have.
A set of used 1.8L brakes (bigger than the earlier brakes)
R front lip (just installed but not in pictures)

What the car needs />It could use some more tuning time. The fuel table is safe but not efficient and I have setup the timing table EXTREMELY conservative. The car will come with a pair of e-det cans for timing tuning.
Idle stabilizer valve recently got stuck open. I have the hose blocked off and set the idle at 1000 rpms. It drives happily but requires a bit of gas on start-up. Many people run their track cars this way.
Right rear brake rattles over bumps, the little springs that hold the pads open aren’t being effective or are missing. As mentioned above I have a whole used 1.8l brake setup that goes with the car.
ABS unit does not work, the pick-up rings on the rear axles are missing, looks like the axles were changed at some point in time. If this bothers you swapping in some axles with the rings should fix the problem.
No catalytic converter. I haven’t had the car inspected for 2 years knowing it wouldn’t pass. I recently found out that NJ will allow collector plates on this car which will no longer require inspections. If need be you can put a 2.5 in-out cat in the straight section of the exhaust without a problem, I just never bothered.

Out of sheer curiosity, is this #3778? It looks very familiar.

Certainly is. What history do you have on the car BRG?

Ha. I knew it. That is the old brg that I used to own and sold to olderguy (Bruce) who you probably bought it from. It was the green door panels, custom green shift boot with tan stitching (which I made), and the locations of a few dings that gave it away. Just a couple of notes, but things may have changed based on what may have been added/deleted from the car:

1) When it left my driveway, it had 1.8 brakes on it, so I'd double check as I doubt someone swapped in a set of 1.6 brakes, but who knows.
2) The rollbar is actually an older 6-point Autopower bar (the tallest available) which is good for the helmet test, but it will NOT fit with a HT. Harness bar was removed b/c it interfered with seat recline so unless you were shorter than 5'6" it got in the way.
3) Again, when it left my driveway it was on it's fourth motor with approximated 70k miles and 190 compression across the board. Motor #1 died an oily death at 18psi at a dyno day. Motor #2 was a low milage replacement that was swapped out for motor #3 which is the built motor that got swapped into my widebody brg. Motor #4 was a 70k mile stock motor that was swapped out of the widebody and in great shape as it never saw any boost until your ownership.
4) IIRC powersteering rack was 'correctly' depowered the FM way by removing the interior seals and not just looping the lines.

You've obviously taken good care of it and it looks waaaaay better than it did when I ever owned it. Glad to see it went to an enthusiast. I had a long history with that car and was sad to see it go. I hope it goes to another good home.

That all makes sense. That motor was strong, and yes the car was my baby, never saw rain. The guy who bought it will take care of it, his name is Dave and he's also on the Mob so we kept it in the family. I'm going to send him your way if he has any other questions, it's always nice to know the history of the car.

Yep, I got the car tucked away in the garage now. Some good info there, I'll have to check out the brakes as Scott gave me a set of 1.8 brakes to swap in. Thanks for the extra info.

I've been looking into it. Since they only made 4000 you can have it registered as a collector. You have to get a letter from Mazda or an official club with the production numbers. As well as limited insurance.
