Default 2004 mazdaspeed on Craigslist - probably a scam

Just for giggles - http://merced.craigslist.org/car/576878642.html

I have no reason to doubt this person except for the claimed mileage, condition, year, make and model of the car. Other than that, I am sure it is fine...

I sent them an email anyway, just to see what would happen.

yup, just searched for the email they listed and the exact same car was for sale in Washington, DC; Columbus and some other city. All three have been flagged in the last 15 hours. Lol. Sorry for wasting bandwidth, I just enjoy these silly car sale games.

So apparently my email got to him before they closed the ad. Here is what he replied back with today:
wcraig327@msn.com

Hello,
This 04 Miata MX-5 is in perfect working condition. This 178HP, 16 Valve, 4 Cyl. 1.8 Liters engine, RWD with 6 speed manual transmission has 25K original miles and runs very, very smooth. It does 0-60 In 6.7 Secs. This Miata looks like it just came off the assembly line. A clean car, non-smoker owned, always garaged and very well babied. It was driven by my wife, so this was never raced or involved in any kind of accidents. This is a well equipped Miata. It's going to go fast. VIN# JM1NB354440408486. Here you can find a lot of pics with the car: http://s263.photobucket.com/albums/i...327/?start=all
(if the above link does not work copy and paste it into a new web browser window)

So if you will decide to buy the car, I want the deal closed only through eBay. You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and you inspect it, eBay will release the payment to me, in this way we are both protected. I signed up for US military forces and I was sent here with my department to improve the military relations between our country and UK. I am located in London, United Kingdom. In December, my wife moved here with me, but now we have to sell it because we need the cash here for personal reasons and registering here would cost too much; it is a left-hand wheel and here all cars are right-handed, it has US specs and everything, and registering it here in Europe will take for ever.
My final price on it is $3850 US (there is no typo). If you will take it for this price, I am willing to handle the shipping. It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place. From the moment the payment is secured by eBay the shipping process will begin and it will arrive at your address in about 3-4 days. Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy and include in your e-mail your full name and complete address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them.
Cheers, Craig Walker

I think I am going to ask him where he is stationed since I am also in the Military and have friends in at Lakenheath and Mildenhall. Maybe they can come by and look at the car as a second party.

What a tool.

Sounds great. Where are you stationed? I am also in the military and have friends of mine stationed at Lakenheath and Mildenhall. Maybe they could come by and see the car before you ship it off? By regulation, you are only allowed to ship one vehicle and it can only happen when you move into and out of country. So you would have to ship this via a commercial carrier. Please explain how I am going to send Ebay money unless there is an auction involved. Perhaps since Paypal is now the official payment method of Ebay, we can use that method.

Heheh, I got the same email from him at 6:59 NY time tonight. How is this all of a sudden going to be transacted through eBay, when it was a CL ad? I replied to him that it sounded 'awesome' and asked him to please send me the eBay link since I misplaced it.

And DOES eBay hold your money until you approve of the car? I think not.

Now compare this to a 92 Miata that was posted at a starting bid of 14 cents, by a seller with 0 feedback. Their response to my inquiry sounds very similar to the 'guy in the military'

Hello,

Sorry to answer so late, the price is $2,600; the car is located in
Maryland. I sell the car due some circumstances in my life. I had an
accident and I lost my hearing. I go every day to do treatment here at a
clinic. Don't worry the accident wasn't in the car.
We will make this deal only under ebay protection, if you want to make this
deal outside ebay please don't reply me. The car is in great condition
inside, outside and mechanically. The interior of the car is free of cracks,
rips, tears or any other damage. The vehicle's undercarriage is free of
rust, leaks, or mechanical damage. The vehicle's electric is working
perfectly. The engine in this vehicle runs like the day it was brand new. If
you are interested about this car, please provide me the following
information's necessary to take a decision:
-your full name and address.
-Ebay ID

Thank you,

Patricia

P.S if you want more pictures, feel free to ask me.
And of course, the eBay ad has since been removed, and the seller is no longer a registered user.

When I'm bored at work I love messing with these guys, saying things like I sent them a payment and giving them fake Western Union transfer numbers, spamming their email, etc.

This is not an ebay listing. The car was listed on Craigslist and not on eBay! I am just using the eBay protection and shipping program offered by ebay. They will manage the deal (papers transfer, payment and payment safety). The payment will be sent to an ebay agent in charge with our deal. eBay will act as the middle man, holding the payment until you receive and inspect it. You will have a 30 days inspection period to check and drive the car. Only after you agree that the car is the one you paid for, they will release the money to me. If you find it to not suit the description you will be fully refunded so you have nothing to lose. They will guaranty in this deal that the car you will receive is exactly as advertised with a clean/clear title.
From the moment the payment is confirmed by eBay the shipping process will begin and you will have the car at your address in about 3-4 days. You will not have to pick it up. Please reply with your full name and address, and I will start the process with eBay. You will receive all the transaction details from them.
Thanks, Craig
Craig,
OK, that makes sense. I *thought* I saw the car on Craigslist, so I was confused when you mentioned eBay.

This is the first time I've heard of using an eBay agent to manage a Craigslist sale. Is this common?

Thanks for your patience,
Chris

Ask him if you can just send him cash in an envelope. Get an address or a phone number...watch him sweat when you ask for those.
