"Drug seizure" just happened to be the most convenient excuse. As the other cases show, there are plenty of other excuses available to law enforcement if they want to take your stuff and/or your money.

Ending the war on drugs would limit this behavior (and make it more difficult), but it would not eliminate it.

the money had nothing to do with drugs. they just wanted an excuse to take it.

Under a 1984 federal law, state and local law-enforcement agencies that work with Uncle Sam on seizures get to keep up to 80% of the proceeds. Last year, under this “equitable-sharing” program, the federal government paid out more than $500 million, up about 75% from a decade ago.

immoral, injust, and improper legalized profit incentives for police need to end.

Meanwhile, the money bearnie madoff made off with is still at large.

In our system of justice, the evidence needs to be overwhelming, for establishing guilt. There only needs to be reasonable doubt, in establishing innocence.

It's worse in Canada. They can take your **** for suspicion of bring involved I'm any criminal activity including speeding on the street. In the last year here in vancouver we've had two cars taken for allegedly street racing. A ferrari and a bmw m6. No trial no fines, nothing.
