I'm sure you know this is a loaded statement, but for the rest of the forum who might not be familiar with the history of the four corners area I'll try to provide the backstory.
After the gold rush there was a large push to find anything worth mining in the rockies. There were numerous bores cut with blatant disregard for what was coming out of the earth. A lot of that had to do with a basic misunderstanding of toxicity and the drive to succeed in the pursuit of vast wealth.
The Gold king mine spill is a sh#tty situation. The bore was cut, very little of value was pulled out, and the miners left their sh#t show for later generations to clean up. In comes the EPA and a heavy handed excavator with orders to evaluate just how bad things were just beneath the bore plug.... and bam... the Gold king mine spill. It is kind of funny for anyone who skis at Silverton, because its obvious that heavy metals have been leaching out of the mine for decades now. Soooo do we blame the EPA? or maybe the short sighted miners? or maybe the earth for having bad stuff in it? I guess it depends on what gang color you associate with.
(Full disclosure: My family homesteaded in the Durango-Silverton area in the early 1800s and could very well have been involved in these unscrupulous activities :P)
The blame definitely lies with the EPA. They did it and now they claim they can't pay. How many times have they fined other companies for whatever the **** they made up to fine for and they would go to prison if they didn't pay? Now the EPA completely ***** the whole area and an entire river and not a single one of them is held responsible?
I work in powerplants and I have had to deal directly with EPA officials. We were starting up that day and they were there to "observe emissions." Their dumbass leader thought the cooling tower mist was emissions. They also had absolutely no idea how a powerplant works. So my perception of the competence of the EPA officials is extremely low and now they are just ******* criminals getting away with everything.
Even R2D2 is saying "screw it, I'm not going in there..."

Radiation levels inside the damaged Fukushima nuclear reactor are over 100 times fatal levels, the highest they've been since the triple meltdown in March, 2011, according to operator Tepco. The company recently sent a camera-equipped robot into the reactor, which relayed images showing a meter-wide hole in the pressure vessel (above), with possible melted uranium fuel on a grating below. "It may have ... melted and made a hole in the [containment] vessel, but it is only a hypothesis at this stage," a company spokesperson told the AFP.

Tepco and its partners had been unable to locate the exposed low-enriched uranium fuel (LEU), a prerequisite to decommissioning the plant. So far, the levels of radiation made it impossible to get cameras and robots in close in close enough to gauge the damage -- of the five sent in, none returned.

You should just stay away.'” he concluded. “I don’t know if they were taking orders from someone or if they were just being lazy. I don’t know what the situation was, but it was pathetic to watch. Our police, who are supposed to defend the citizens of Berkeley. It’s a sad scene that they would allow that.”
