I've lurked around here for awhile and have just been learning for the past year. I bought a miata that already had a baby turbo on it because I got it for a price that I couldn't refuse considering the mileage. This fall I sold my other fast car that was keeping me content. But now I need to fill the gap and hopefully this will be enough. My current turbo setup isn't ideal for my goals because there isn't enough space the way the manifold places the turbo and the rest of the setup wasn't built to be upgraded. So I'm starting over. I am going to do it right so I don't have to mess with it again (at least for a year or so). My goals are to build something that is reliable, efficient, fast and not your typical bolt on kit from a single vendor that will start at 225 rwhp and take me to over 325 with a lower compression built engine. I will build the engine this summer, but I want everything else up and running prior to this on my stock engine. This is what I have in mind so far and I would like to hear what everyon thinks of it. And this is for a 2001. Thanks.

Garrett GT2871R with T3 housing and external wastegate
Flipside ramhorn manifold
Tial 38mm wastegate
All stainless steel lines and AN fittings
Coolant reroute possibly?
FMIC (just don't know what size or brand)
Walbro 190hp fuel pump
Dual feed fuel rail
3" exhaust w/provision for catalytic converter or test pipe
550cc injectors
Hydra EMS
Larger radiator

I'm sure I'm forgetting some things and I'm not worried about the cost involved in doing it right.

Finally.. someone else that is considering a 2871! Your setup looks good. I think you will find here that most people opt for the chinacoolers off ebay and the "godspeed" radiators. Value does not always mean a sacrifice.

Good start. Consider looking into some hardlines for the coolant lines at the turbo for the ultimate in reliability.

Ditch the Hydra and run an MSPNP, it'll save you $1k+ and your engine will never know the difference.

I assume Flipside can also do you a badass DP. Use an Enthuza 3" catback and have someone make you a testpiped midsection and a catted midsection. Or look into the BEGi HE-X downpipe, with the twin staggered 3" cats. You can't remove them, but the setup is so badass I don't know if you'd want to.

You don't need to lower compression to hit 325whp, but you will probably need a meth/water kit to hit that on the 2871 on pump gas. I would stick with 9:1. Just do a mild build, pistons, rods, and head studs, and then work a '99 head, and that's all you need. There's a guy who just did 520whp on a stock BP block/crank with just forged pistons/rods and ARP hardware.

You'll definitely want a coolant reroute, as well as a big radiator, a good set of fans (if you want PnP call up FCM and get a set of Myron's SPALs with his shroud), and a vented hood. You'll also need an oil cooler. Mocal is the best, if cost is no object.

550cc injectors are not going to get you to 325whp, I don't think. You may need to look into some 650s or 700s.

I will assume that you'll be putting this beast in front of a 6-speed transmission and a cryo-treated 7" or an Rx7 rear end.

Good luck. If you do move forward with this build soon, I will be watching you closely, since my next goal is to do 325whp on pump 91 and meth injection, and it's down to the GT2871R and the GT3071R.

This project will definitely happen. I have just been waiting to get out of the Army to start it. My final day is less than 90 days away and this will be a present to myself. I didnt look seriously at the MS because I don't believe it can control the VVT on an 01 and I'm looking for PNP with it as well. Still really unsure about the turbo as well. I really would have no problem going smaller and then upgrading when I put the new engine in. I do know I want something with a T3 flange and an external wastegate. I may even give a china charger special a try since it will hit my lower goal pretty easily and I can just put in a bigger turbo when the new engine goes in. I don't track the car at all and I have no plans to do so with the exception of an occasional pass at the drag strip. I will mostly be using it for street use with runs from 40-150 or so. I'm working on acquiring a 6 speed now and will also find 3.63 gears when I do the swap.

You just said price isn't an issue above and now your talking about chinachargers. Why not just buy one big ball bearing turbo and be done with it?

if money is no object and you want high numbers then you should def get a twin scroll turbo like the one in this link....it provides big numbers but still spools the turbo faster than your standard turbo so you have less turbo lag
