Default And so it begins..1st turbo build(SR20 turbo)

Ok, here's where I be...


Found me a 94 as virgin as new fallen snow about 6 months ago. Got the urge to boost and started looking for parts. Thanks to some great members on this board, I now have everything (at least I hope so).


Purchased and on hand..
SR20 turbo with coolant and oil lines
Begi cast manifold
Begi separate gas downpipe
Begi intercooler
FM BOV
All pipes for cold side w/filter
Yellow RX8 injectors
New MSPNP being built by another member (new)
Boost gauge (new)
AEM Wideband (new) that just got installed today
Sweet Mustang gauge pod for the center dash (new)


Since this is my daily driver and I'm gonna try and get this done in one foul swoop, what am I missing?


The only thing I can think of is mounting hardware and gaskets I may be missing...


What should I worry about?


I've read a bunch and used the search function like a good newb should, but all I saw was the turbo hitting the block...HA HA


I have been very careful and spent only $1750 on everything so far. I plan on using the rest of my meager budget on a 3" turbo back exhaust

It sounds like you have the big parts.

What really slows you down is the small parts. Make sure you have every bolt, nut, clamp, crimp connector, etc that you'll need - plus some spares.

Where are you going to pull oil from? do you have all of the required fittings for that?
Do you have a drill bit and tap for your oil return? What about hose? Vacuum lines for the MAP sensor & boost gauge? check valves if you're keep cruise control?

I'd read over FM's install instructions a few times to see if you're missing anything minute. They're really verbose and I bet you catch a few small things you're missing.

Clutch? FM 1 seems to be a go-to. That's what I'm using.

The saying is correctly "one fell swoop". But Shuiend makes a good point, on how to keep this from being "one foul swoop", or even "one fail swoop":

If this is your 1st rodeo, "one fell swoop" is a really bad idea if you want to do things right.

Yeah, you're right about a lot of things there.


The plan is, a friend built me a DIYMS. We will be installing that this week and tuning before the turbo.


Clutch will be down the road

Install order should be
1. Install MSPNP and learn to tune the engine NA. You should spend a few months like this getting the hang of MS.
2. Install larger injectors and retune,
3. Install stronger clutch and break it in properly.
4. Install turbo setup.

If the stock clutch is any good, you should be good for wastegate pressure, although if you're just a tiny bit too aggressive on it, you'll start slipping.

Add injectors to the wideband/MS install weekend. I'd think drilling and tapping the oil pan will be your longest job, although I've personally never done it with an engine in the car.

My stock 94 clutch started slipping around 6-7psi with my old sr20 turbo. So yeah if you are careful you can get by for a while, but if you have creep or anything you may have problems.

I am against installing bigger injectors at the same time as a MS if you are a newb, just because it is one more then that could screw up and cause you problems. I had forgotten about the wideband, that needs to go in at the same time or before the MS.

Get good studs/nuts for the manifold and turbo, maybe even some locking hardware. Most don't run gaskets for the turbo. Source drill and tap for oil pan. Have all the fittings and whatnot for the oil and coolant lines figured out. Rebuild turbo if it needs it. Air filter/intake setup. Heat protection around turbo area for master cylinder, heater hoses, etc.

All great info.

The bet thing is that I have a seasoned professional doing me a solid and tuning everything. I don't trust myself to handle any tuning.

And now I guess I'll be looking for a clutch...

Definitely recommend spreading the one fell swoop out over a few weekends.

1) Clutch and other maintenance items
2) Megasquirt, gauges, wideband, and injectors
(I'd do it all at once. You'll be tweaking enrichment etc. regardless of whether your using stock or larger injectors. Just look around and you can find settings for almost everything people here use.)
3) Reroute or other supporting upgrades (or intercooler install)
4) Everything Turbo

Please do this, you'll spend more time and money trying to figure everything out at once. Learn it step by step, as an added bonus you'll be less likely to blow up your car!

Again, I have an experienced tuner helping out.

We installed the MS and tuned. Then installed the injectors and tuned. Runs like a champ now. I'll be putting a clutch on it in a couple of weeks and break it in.

Then on goes to turbo...

Outta nowhere update.

The car is my daily. Put about 3,000 miles on it. Only issue was a blown heater core hose that was too close to the turbo. Heat shield ordered. MS is doing great. Running around 10lbs (anything more blows couplings off the charge pipe). So much fun to drive.

I'll get beads rolled in the manifolds and turn the boost up to maybe 12

Everyone should have a turbo.

There's a foolish theory around here that turbo heat won't hurt a hose that has coolant running through it. I've heard it said. And it would be incorrect as you have proven.
