Default S200SX BorgWarner

I am at the very early stages of my build, engine parts have started arriving and i am now at the point of choosing a turbo. I was fairly settled on a garrett GTX2867R, however new it'll cost more than my budget will allow and I'm not going to spend around £1000 for a used one.
I am aiming for around 350+hp and the S200SX is rated for 220hp to 580hp. The comp map looks reasonable and new JEGS are selling them for about $700. All seems too good to be true, so has anyone Used this turbo on their 5? Mines a 1.6, forged rods and pistons, C/R 8.5:1, etc.
Really would appreciate any advice.

its going to be stupid laggy.
I'm of the mindset that if you can't afford the $500 price difference on a turbo when you're already spending thousands on building the engine, well, then you shouldn't be doing this.

are you not able to get a 1.8 and start with a proper engine?

I did consider the 1.8 but decided against, just wanted to stick with what i already had. The amount of money isn't an issue, i am still leaning towards the garret but I am very impatient. But if I eventually to decide to go for the garret ill just do more overtime and save a few more pennies even if it takes a few more months. All this post was to see what experience you guys had over the pound with these turbos because the only borgwarners being used over here are the baby ones with people making 200-300...just. and I want to aim for a little bit more.

if you have the opportunity to go 1.8 and you stick with 1.6 for no good reason, you are crazy

I'm serious.

It is a very big deal with turbo cars.

Look its what I want to do with my car. I am not going to get into the debate about which is better, otherwise i would have started off claiming I was a 1.6 fanboy and that everyone who has a 1.8 is crazy. its an extra 200cc, fine ill add another 0.125Bar of boost, all other limitations can also be worked around.

Ok. I'm trying to show you how bad your decision is in hopes that it was unintentional. Trying to help. If you want to be stubborn in your bad decisions, then no problem.

But do what you want, it's your car.

PS: it's not about peak power, it's about the powerband and torque curve. You'll realize this later when it will be too late and you already spent a bunch of money for an inferior powerband. 200cc is much more important than you think with boost

good luck

I am stubborn, yes. Im not going to follow the crowd. I will stick the 1.6. But I will rethink my turbo options.

PS I have already made changes to ensure my torque curve will be just fine

Yeah, you've dug your grave now.

No one will put time into helping someone who won't help them self.

I'm not disregarding what has been said in relation to my original question, have i? I will look for a different turbo, as has been suggested. I have not been in anyway rude or abusive.

Not sure how swapping to a 1.8 is "following the crowd", if it is, then so is boosting your Miata, or owning one in general. Being smarter with your build is not following the crowd, it's being effective with your time/ money/ energy.

Also, if you cant even decided what turbo you want to run for yourself, how do you expect us to believe you have any clue how to "ensure your torque curve will be just fine"

You have zero way of knowing your tq curve without having solidified which turbo you will run...

That was with regard to the 1.6 performing poorly when compared to the 1.8

There is no 350whp turbo on the market today that will make acceptable low-end torque on a B6 engine.

I never understand threads like this.

"Here's my plan, I'd really appreciate any advice"

*disagrees with everything that doesn't follow his original statement*

There is a reason people here "follow the crowd" with respect to things such as this. Because others have already written the R&D checks to determine the logical routes.

Do you want to race civics on the interstate? 1.6L and a huge turbo + brake boosting and you're limited by how wide the 18" tires you'll run fit in the back for traction.

Look at Pat's compound setup for spool and low end torque info. Then add 1000rpm to where the torque starts on the virtual dyno plot, and remember his rev limiter is at least 1000rpm over stock. And is designed to go fast at WOT in a straight line.

Look at the thread regarding posting your spool and compare different turbos and engines. I believe it is called "I want your spool data!"
