Default ar 70 big turbo stock block???

Ok everyone i been out of the miata turbo game for 5 years since i sold my 91 fm turbo miata. I miss the car so bad, so when a 94 turbo miata with blown motor came up for sale cheap i jumped on it. So young kid bought the car already built with turbo and haltec ecu.. He got boost happy and shot piston out the block. The car is real clean and has a ok set up. My options are to do a budget fix and just put in a used motor and find out what driving a ar70 garette turbo is like and see how the tune is on the set up he had and leave it as is. 2nd is to find a built motor and run 20psi and see if i like the big turbo and just hope its not to laggy or 3rd route get a smaller turbo and change old haltec to mspnp and buy a stock 94 harness since the one in it now is all hacked to run haltec.. my power goal on stock block would be 250whp and if built 350whp. Any input, advice or experiance is great thanks.

I would hate a hacked wiring harness... That would be fix #1 no matter what i did.

Sounds like you bought a car from someone who *didn't* listen to our advice in the last 3-6 months.

350 at the wheels is a mighty whimsical goal to start out with. Best bet is to build the bottom end to handle 350 now while shooting for 250 - then go from there.

If you've already completed the 100 level courses of Miata Turbo Institute, here's the 202 course:

You're in Sac? Is it red? Is this Seans most recent car?

Didn't know there was any other big turbo miata's in this area besides Sean.

What haltech is it? Should say on the box. If you connect to it with a USB cable and not a serial cable or serial to usb adapter its more than sufficient for what you want. I've always had terrible luck with haltech products but if you have a laptop it likes and have it wired decently they're solid as a rock, and I wouldnt go through the time and effort to swap it with an MS.

If you have the time to have the car down, doing a budget build on a 99-00 would be the easiest choice. I'm not sure if the haltech you have supports vvt the new style sensors which is why I point to the 99-00 motor. I know the ones made in the last 6 years would run a vvt engine completely, but if you have some ancient serial connection, tune with DOS haltech, then probably not.

Im no longer in sac. Im in atlanta ga now. Its been a while since i sold my turbo. so i been thinking about new wire harness and ecu MS pnp so i can tune it. New injectors since i dont know what size or type he had on it. New fm or act or 949 raceing clutch kit. But before i go all out i will put a used motor in and see how it runs keeping a close eye on af ratio and boost pressure. I will report back how the car runs and how bad the spool is. Its got a electronic boost cont and i will try to see what the cars runs like on just 12 psi.

You can tune the haltech you know. If you can tune 1 stand alone you can tune them all, with variations on a theme.

Yea i need to do some research on the ecu and find out what program i need to set up tunning and see what sort of tunning was done. if i can pull out his old fuel and timing map i can adjust it for more safety. the car also has a knock box installed, its electonic box with red light bars that i guess move side to side when knock is detected. The car was built good and was raced solo 2 by the original owner before kid bought it and blew it up. I wish i could add pictures but i dont know how.

Yeah knock detection is one of the things haltech has been missing. You've been a member since 2008 and dont know how to add pictures? Upload them to your image sharing site of choice and paste the direct link into the box that pops up when you hit the button about the text box that looks like a picture of a mountain.

Lol yea i am a memeber since 08. I read as much as i can and try to learn from others experiance. I post some questions and any good feed back. I read that my e6k haltech is a old lady. Runs on dos real hard and slow to tune. So now need to buy MS and 94 harness. Looking for a smaller turbo and thinking about useing a 99 head. So much work so lil time.
