A week ago I started hearing a rattle sound coming from the turbo and figured it was the WG rod hitting the compressor side, I've had this problem for some time now and didn't pay it much mind. The car has been parked since then because I've been sick and didn't feel like driving. Today I fixed the WG rod and cranked it up to still find the same rattling sound. After some investigating figure I might have a bad bearing or a blade is tapping one of the housings. I turn the car off and pull the filter to check the compressor blades... Nothing wrong there. Next I take the v-band clamp off the CHRA to check the exhaust side and to my horror I find this....

Any ideas as to what might cause this would be great or what to do at this point. There are no signs of the blades hitting the exhaust housing and there is no play in the shaft.

Did I have a gremlin eat my blades?!?

It almost looks like they've melted?
I have no idea... Could spark cut only launch control do that?

cant tell if its FOD or High EGTs. It really looks melted.

I can't see where anything might have come from that could have caused damage like this and the carbon is from running a little rich.

No cat or muffler to check for anything so clues there. Guess its time rebuild the turbo and hope it doesn't happen again.

FOD. The tips are all bent backwards cuz the blade tip speed is faster than the chunk of exhaust valve they're hitting.

Oh and there might be some overtemping in there too

If you heard a rattling coming from the turbo then the blades were definitely hitting something.

I've seen something like that when a guy lost two electrodes off of his spark plugs from detonation and they went through the turbine. It is foreign object damage, not melting. Could be any little bits and pieces from your engine or that went through your engine.

Edit: Are you missing any nuts?

Well I have yet to have the heart to touch the spark map for fear of detonation... I am using a base map for it still. I know the blades where hitting something but I can't figure out what. It's not the housing or at least it isn't showing any signs of it. Compression test came out fine so I doubt it is a piece of a valve. Spark plugs are kinda fowled from running rich. I don't know what the hell it was... anyway new turbine and compressor blades are on their way so I can have it rebuilt. While I am at it I'm ordering a clutch and flywheel so I finally have an excuse to go to the dyno and tune...

I actually used your advice and made det cans to tune a friends car a month or so ago. They do look stupid as **** but work.

At the time I hooked it up to my car just to test and never heard anything. Maybe I'm just deaf but w/e if it was detonation I guess it means its time to rebuild and have it tuned by someone else....
