So is anyone running the Shanghai-S yet?
Cheap kit Begi is putting out. Whos had the guts to try it? Im thinking about going with the Shanghai-s, and not adding ANYTHING to it. Looking at this kit, how do you think it will do as is with nothing added?
BEGI Shanghai-S Turbo System 1990-1993 BEGi
My plan is to run it as is, with a DIY FMIC. I want to get it set up and running, then later on add MS pNp. Thoughts?

Yeah, and I hope that one person (I think we are thinking of the same guy) lets me take a ride in it when he is done. He should have it soon, and Im sure he wont waste time installing it either.

Why won't BEGi offer a warranty like the $1000 American (Freedom) made turbo for the Communist, authoritarian, child-labor turbo with mystery construction and reliability? I can't reason simple concepts.

Because Begi is known for providing reliable, well constructed parts no matter where it was made. I was hoping they would test the **** out of the turbo, put their stamp of approval and cover the warranty themselves.

It is not like we warranty anything that is made by someone else. That has always been covered by the original manufacturer. I just wanted to make sure it was clear that if it breaks within the warranty period that it will be sent to the manufacturer for repair. If you get a bad autometer gauge, you are subject to Autometer Warranty policies not BEGI's. That is industry standard, and our standard policy for the last 20 years.

Shanghai kits have not shipped yet. I would expect them to start shipping later this week / first part of next week. I need to get a new oil inlet fitting for this turbo.

Why not? We don't fix Garrett turbos. We never have. They go back to Garrett.

I talked to Corky and he put me in touch with the manufacturer over in China. My wife and I are in the process of adopting the to two Chinese children who actually built the turbo. As soon as the adoption comes through I am putting them to work in the garage doing the install.
I hear they don't eat much.

What happens is that they won't replace your motor... but neither will Garrett. The warranty you're paying for is not to replace the turbo when it starts to leak a little... it's the peace of mind that it's not going to destroy your engine.
In the end, if a new Disco is $1000, then I can buy 2 Freedoms and 2 spare used motors for the cost of a Garrett... and probably part all the accessories that come with my used motors and end up way ahead. But then again, what is your time and ***-pain worth for all of that.
I hear a lot of people saying Chinachargers are reliable in the short term... but will they last 100k+ miles of daily abuse for everybody? I hear 40k... but that's the highest mileage I've ever heard for one of them. Only time will tell. I'm a potential customer... but I need a few more datapoints... time.
