Default Comparing genuine vs chinacharger 2871?

So I have been looking around lately for a bigger turbo to go with my end of the year build. I want to make about 250 whp by 10psi without changing anything else on my current setup except the turbo and injectors (either going with DW 600's or RX-7 550's). I want to run whatever turbo I buy on a 10psi wastegate actuator, and my EBC is on a switch which will be set to 16psi or 20psi or whatever I feel like, and also whatever my fueling can handle. I found this turbo on the BEGI site:
http://www.bellengineering.net/produ...roducts_id=404
They say it compares to a GT2871, but if you look at the specs and then go here:
http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...ison_sheet.htm
it's not really even close....or is it?

doesn't look close to me. other than turbine A/R, looks closer to a GT2560 to me http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...R_466541_1.htm. I'm guessing your motor is built? If you've already spent that much money, might as well play it safe and do it right with a GT2871.

my Miata isn't even turbo'd yet, I've looked into the whole chinacharger thing, and it seems to work out for some/many guys, but I just feel better getting an actual proven and tested turbo

Nope. Thats more like a 2860. Try speedyracer gt2870. Phil measured and is almost identical to a Garrett 2871

DEAR EVERYONE,

If you follow this link: http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...ochargers.html

You can be provided with a list of current Garrett Turbos. If you click each turbo, it shows you the wheel sizes. This is an easy way to compare and contrast different trim turbos, and even the Chinachargers on eBay which have specs...

Love,
Brain

I made this for myself... might be useful for fellow noobs

SR turbos are the ebay speedy-racer ones since those seem to be pretty popular. the t25/28 are the stock 240sx ones.

Chinacharger will blow up after repeated visits to 20+ psi. Genuine will not.

I initially found it interesting that so many people here have luck with Chinese turbos, then I realized that most are not running more than about 15psi. Any asshat with a DSM and a cheap approach to high boost can verify that Chinese turbos do not last more than a couple thousand miles (but don't understand why it broke ), so I'll suggest using the genuine turbo.

pulled the info from there.

From what my friend tells me (I really haven't looked into myself)... the stock T25s sell for dirt cheap...BUT the T28s guys will ask like 600 bucks... used..journal bearing. I don't get why, at that point might as well buy a Garrett. I was looking to get a T28, thinking it would be cheap cheap, but doesn't seem to be the case. specs wise it looks about the same as a GT2860 which is pretty sweet.

Why are you setting an arbitrary boost ceiling? BTW, you won't hit 250whp at 10psi with anything less than a 30R, and the spool on a 30R will suck.

Two cars, 250whp at 15psi or 250whp at 10psi, give me the 15psi car any day because it will spool better and drive smoother.

If it's not considered heresy in these parts, have a look at Mitsu flanged Big T28's, made by Forced Performance. Compressor wheel from a 16g stuffed into a T25 comp housing. Compact, full spool by 3000rpm, flows about 500cfm, and can be found used in good condition for $300-500.

I don't really understand where the 20psi figure comes from either, but am kinda curious about the "being ran at higher boost the fake ones usually die fast while the real ones last" claim. Since I've heard it from a few people before.

Wonder if there is anyone here pushing a chinacharger to well over 18psi and the results.

There are Nissan T28 turbos that are in fact ball bearing (I think from the S15s) that with current Garrett nomenclature would spec to a GT2560. Guys will ask anywhere from $450-600 for those, used, depending on condition and who is doing the asking. You can find good deals if you cruise the classifieds on sr20forum, zilvia.net and maybe nicoclub for a few weeks. The journal bearing T28s go for much less, say $125-200, and with those you might as well spend a few more bucks and get a rebuild kit too. When I was turbo shopping I had all the Nissan turbo part numbers along with wheel specs in a file somewhere but I can't find it now. Google S14 and S15 turbo specs and that should get you started. A journal bearing T28 would be a good street turbo for a 1.8 if you want to trade a bit of spool for a couple hundred bucks.

Thanks Scott. I guess my friend was off. I couldn't understand for the life of me how the journal bearing T28 could possibly be worth so much... Ball bearing..yeah I understand that. Thanks for the info

They drop like flies on DSMs, which is where I based my opinion. Perhaps they are improving in quality across the board, or a few good ones actually make it out of the factories and by sheer luck are balanced, or it's a specific model, but on the whole they have been worse for wear than genuine brand name turbos.

Here's a screenshot of a poll of DSM owners with Chinese/eBay turbos. The sample is small, but it reflects what I've heard/read about them. Thread.

Wow, just wow. I have been over 15 psi for over a year now. Chinacharger has not complained one bit. In fact, my charger doesn't even reallly come alive until over 15 psi.

so don't buy an ebay 16g.

my t3 chinacharger has lasted a year now running 15psi

the success rate % for the 20g and holset are much higher than the failure of the 16g

100% success vs. 60% failure
