Default DIY non-intercooled turbo setup

I am considering piecing together a non-intercooled turbo setup that I can upgrade over time. Think Greddy kit, but much higher quality and not as slow.

I have experience turbocharging N/A cars from my GTI VR6. I know what's important and what's not. I know that buying cheap parts usually costs more down the line instead of just buying the good **** from the start.

Here's what I'm thinking for the main stuff:

AEM
Boostlogic tubular top-mount manifold
GT2871 w/ Tial v-band
3" DP w/ 3" electric cutout mated to my stock exhaust

I would run aluminum piping from the TB across to the compressor outlet a-la the KW S/C kit.

Wondering if I could hit 200whp...

Questions? Comments? Criticisms?

Turbo is way to big for your goals. Only need a t25 to get you to 200whp, And they are only 200$
Aem is way to expensive - Megasquirt is perfect for you Can build your own for 250 or pay someone 400 for time and materials to build it for you.
a 2 1/2" downpipe will do just fine for your power goal, Cutouts waste of money
BTW you can buy a DIY intercooler kit for 169$ shipped on ebay.
Never heard of the manifold. I can build you one for a much more reasonable price.

The turbos size is totally relative. I don't understand why a lot of you guys run such dinky little things, but that's your business. The 2871 is the smallest I will go.

The Boostlogic manifold is ****. I don't think I can find a better manifold that allows me to run AC and PS. No offense, but if you haven't heard of Boostlogic, you don't get around much. They are very highly regarded in the Supra, Porsche and GTR communities. They make some of the best products available.

What size is the exhaust housing on a 2871? I thought the Tial exhaust housings were 3" v-band?

IMO the electric cutout is the best exhaust ever. Runs quiet when you want it to, makes more power than a full exhaust when it's open, and costs less to boot. It's like having two exhausts on the car all the time. The only issue I could see is the possibility of the motor seizing. Cutout for sure.

No POS eBay intercooler for me, thanks. I don't care how many of you run them, or how much anyone makes with one. I know the difference between a quality IC core and the **** they sell on eBay. I also know how they effect your tune and how much further you can push it. Since I'm jaded like that, I wanted to see where I could go non-intercooled, then add one later as I see fit. It's a cost that doesn't need to be added with my low initial goals.

AEM cost more, but it also offers more. Megasquirt is a real possibility for saving some money, but I'm afraid I will want more eventually. That is the main dilemma for me at this point.

Your mind is unchangeable, go make your non intercooled setup and dyno it. If the dyno curve goes above a line that corresponds with the number "200" on the Y axis, you've met your goal. If your dyno curve stays BELOW that line, you have not met your goal.

I speak for 90% of us here:

We use eBay intercoolers with great success
We love our "dinky" turbochargers.
We love our MegaSquirts
We have no idea who boost logic is
We have been around A LOT. amirght!?
We strongly consider chinachargers and used turbos before a brand new Garrett.

Spool on a 1.6 will be fun

I dont own a supra, porche, or a skyline. I own a miata. Seems like your trying to build some sweet set up that your stock motor wont ever realize.

They are. But for your 200 whp goal you dont need V-band at all or a 3" exhaust.

Your going to have to find some way to change the tune whenever you do it. Suddenly allowing your turbo to spin more freely will lean things up. Id rather have 200 whp all the time then spend a dollar on something as pointless as a cut-out.

They affect your tune by lowering your intake charge temperature and allow you to increase your timing and gain more power, whats not to like? Its a piece of ******* aluminum for gods sake. On the subject of cost, Your planning on spending lots of money on once again nice setups but that your power goal/motor will never be efficient.

AEM cost more, but it also offers more. Megasquirt is a real possibility for saving some money, but I'm afraid I will want more eventually. That is the main dilemma for me at this point.
Its your car do what you want.

A small turbo is fine for those goals, Im a fan of bigger turbos but only when you plan on maiking the power that requires a bigger turbo.

you could run a big turbo on low boost and make 200 hp at 6-7k rpm, or you could run a small turbo on a bit higher boost and make 200hp from 4-7k rpm

also, why no intercooler? its cheap and easy on an NA.

Because for 200whp, that turbo is completely overkill. I'm all about big turbos and kicking *** but for the majority of street cars, that turbo just isn't suited for what most people want. Enjoy your late spool.

If you like switching fuel maps.

Considering that there are people making 1000+ horsepower with MS, I will never understand this line of thought.

Not one of you has even asked me if I planed on building a motor later to use the power potential.

I've seen tons of ****-talking here about M.net saying that they are so close-minded about everything. Guess what you are doing? It's pretty hypocritical. I have an idea that's different than yours. ZOMG!!!!1! IT'S SO WRONG!!!!

If you guys get your panties in a bunch over my turbo selection, I can't wait to see how you'll react to me using 1000cc Bosch low impedance injectors. OMG OMG OMG!!!!! IT'S OVERKILL TO THE MAXIMUM!!!!!

You should get some 1400cc injectors. You won't need to upgrade em ever.

The majority of newbs that come in her saying they're going to build some bad *** miata hardly ever do. If they have the money, they start with a MUCH better car than a $2500 NA.

If you build a bad *** miata with tons of HP, we will bow down to you and start looking at your turbo setup as our "goal", but until then, we will continue to bash. All we're doing is trying to save you some money while your goal is 200hp. We can put you in contact with a few members well above 300hp that will tell you what worked for them and what was a waste of money.

yes. completely on your part.

all the advice given to you is based on common sense and experience.
You take that as a direct attack on you and you start acting like a little bitchy girl.

Here the break down:

You said you wanted to do a budget setup using an AEM ecu,
we said "hey megasquirt works really good and is much cheaper than an AEM, so maybe for your BUDGET setup you would go for that"

You said that you didnt want to run an intercooler because brand name ones are expensive and ebay intercoolers are ****,
we said "there are lots of benefits to an intercooler, and many, many people have had greta success with ebay intercoolers"

You said you wanted to run an electric cutout,
we said "youre going to need secondary fuel maps for the two different exhaust setups"

Nobody is attacking you.
Go get some johnsons tear-free baby shampoo and some maxi-pads from walgreens, and calm the **** down.

That's the worst you hope on him?
lol I hope you spool soo slow a semi truck with out it's trailer would woop you in the 1/4. obviously every one has recomended you something/ an alternative was given you refused to take the advice of the members, ohh well good luck finding alot of help with that awesome ecu your using...

which brings me to another point, MS is probably the best ecu for NA cars u can't find a wider knowledge on it anywhere else and not to mention all of the win it produces.
For 300 bux u could have one made for you and never have to worry about paying some one to tune because you'll have the power to do it all your self!! you want to disregard the people who are trying o help go ahead but by all mean let us know how hot your intake temps are without the IC, ohh wait van you even monitor that with the AEM???
whatever,
BTW who pissed in your cheerios??

I already said a while ago that the MS vs AEM is the main question left unanswered. If you guys could stop beating that deal horse, that would be great.
