Default Expected spool characteristics.

I just picked up a new turbonetics turbo for 75 bucks. (gotta love soldiers that need money quick) I bought it not knowing if I could really use it, but hell for 75 bucks I'd buy it for a paperweight. According to the turbonetics website the part number identifies it as a T3/T4E-50,Stg 5,.63. I've seen plenty of guys run 50 trims with great success but I've not seen many people with a stage 5 turbine wheel. How much will this affect spool? I'm expecting full boost hopefully before 4500 rpm. I'd appreciate any insight. Thanks

its gonna be a little slow, but when it kicks in you'll fly. That turbo should easily support like 400+whp.

My 1.6 with similar chinese turbo spooled up around 3800 so you should be at 3500 or under with a 1.8

Really johnmatt? I also have a similar Chinese turbo on a 1.6l, I dont spool till 4250 or so, with a 3.5 inch exhaust.

a 50 trim T04e with a .63 A/R housing and a stage-5 turbine wheel...it's not spooling up before 3500

Made 10psi at about 3800-4000k on my .50 trim t04e with .63 a/r, stage 3 wheel though.

Stage 5 turbine is HUGE. Its going to be like low psi until like 4.5-5k and then all out ***** to the wall 20psi+ instantly afterward. Maybe a little sooner, but probably not with our shitty heads.

The stage I, II, III, V etc is the size of the turbine wheel.

A stage V is going to be big for a 1.8L. Will be slow to get moving, but the top end will be fun.

AFAIK a stage V turbine wheel is actually physically smalleroverall than say a stage 3. It basically trades shaft RPM in the name of decreased back pressure but acting as less of a restriction. I could be wrong on that, but that's my understanding.

The thing is OP, if it's too lazy, you can switch that out. Shoot I wonder what a good turbine housing and stage V sells for. If you find a used hotside thats more focused on reduced boost threshold while selling your hotside you might be able to make money by buying that thing. Which is about as awesome as it gets.

No it doesn't. Turbine AR = area/radius. Basically the area is the cross section of the turbine inlet, and the radius is the distance from the center of the turbine shaft to the center of the inlet.

Turbine stage is more correlated to the diameter and shape of the turbine blades. Larger turbine wheel = able to flow more but it will have more inertia and a smaller pressure differential which will cause some lag. Likewise, turbine blades that have less pitch will flow more, but just like a wind turbine, without enough pitch, it won't gather as much energy from the exhaust flow which will slow down spool.

Are these "stages" nearly universal? For example all stage 3's are pretty much this and all stage 4's are this pretty much this?

+1 My 57 trim with a .48 turbine and a stage 3 wheel spools slow as **** below 3800. You can actually feel yourself getting older as you watch the boost come up.

Anything above that it spools great, not as fast as a 15G or t28, but real good for that big of a turbo on a 1.6L.

Stage I vs. Stage III

Look at the spacing, the stage three has more spacing between the fins to greatly reduce back-pressure and promote flow, but it takes more effort to get the wheel spinning.

You guys are right I didn't pay any mind to it being a stage 5. I don't what stage wheel have on my churbo
