Default my turbo sucks!

Actually it's the sound i'm annoyed by

It's such a loud sucking hiss .. it's as loud or louder than my bypass valve which is currently venting to atmospherre...

I put whatever damplifier pro i had left on my hood, (a little over a square foot) but that didn't make ANY difference at all.

Would making a heat shield / cold air box reduce the noise? Could i soundproof that??

I used to enjoy just driving around in the miata.. Then i wanted a little more power b/c it was embarassing. Now, i've got enough power, but i feel like a boy racer.. my exhaust is too loud, i have a whooshing BOV, and my intake sounds like a deflating tire!

recirculate your BOV to quiet it down, make sure you don't have a boost leak, get a K&N filter (cheap ones will make more noise than others), and add another muffler to your exhaust, problem solved.

Sam, **** you -- your 1.6L valve cover is still waiting for you ;-) Given enough time i may get bored and start polishing it to see how bad i can screw it up.

I have a begi-s, it hink it came w/a K&N... i will also get a new exhaust at some point, hopefully a 3"..

I will be checking for a boost leak once i get my new intake tract..

Thanks guys

My cold air box reduces the volume of the sucking noise significantly.

That's probably the best you can do short of getting your testosterone injections. If you reposition the filter to a spot with more empty space around it, that would probably help, too. If you're still running the stock exhaust, it will only get much louder with a 3" setup.

Hey,

I'm using this exhaust:
Got a deal on an exhaust! - MX-5 Miata Forum

Before the turbo, this exhaust was ridiculously loud to the point i was going to toss it, having bought it just a few months earlier!

And i found this thread while looking , seems i'm not the only one who likes quiet!
Stock muffler with turbo - MX-5 Miata Forum

I'll be looking into the cold-air box... Braineack -- did you build it yourself? if so, out of what? (aluminum, thickness, how much material, how did you join @ the bends - welding?)

Mine was way too loud also, and I got harassed for asking how to quiet it down. At the moment I have a hot-air intake that isn't too loud but I plan to try turning it into a quieter cold air intake.

i bought some silicone tubing to make a new (straighter) intake... once that's done, it's time to make the cold air box, i'll probably do something similar to this:

if its too loud take it off and ship it over to me. I won't cry about it.

Saw a thread on m.net about this once.. Retarded..

i build "version 1" of my cold air box. it's rude & crude but works, it's definitely a little quieter now. i stuck some leftover damplifier on it ;-)

I bought 2x2 ft aluminum sheet, and cut it in half. I then cut, fit, repeat until it was more or less OK for the bottom end. i then cut the top end by eyeballing the line from the side and marking with a pen.. not ideal, but OK for a rough draft.

for the intake hole, i just cut a "U" out as opposed to making an actual round hole (version 2 will have that).

I notched all along the edges and folded the metal back to make a smoother edge, then pushed some fuel line onto the edges to create a softer edge.

right now it's not perma-mounted with any tabs or whatever, but seems fairly stable because the cutout for the intake is tight enough to hold it tight.

Here's a quick question -- i was planning on using some 'hot water pipe' insulation for the edging instead of the fuel line... do you think this foam tube will be able to withstand underhood temps?

^^ Yeah that is a Mega-fail. If I was FM, I would sue for having my name within 10 feet of that car.

If you enclose the filter and/or add some ducting (smooth wall) it will help lower the sound level. Something like a BEGI-style air box would make a difference.

So since we all drive girlie cars, we must make them loud and obnoxious to compensate, show everyone how manly we are. got it.

In the meantime -- I built my 2nd version of the box.. i used the hot water foam around the top to seal against the hood, and the fuel line along the sides and bottom.

I'll probably build version 3 in a few months once all the cuts on my hands healed :-D
