Default would it be totally stupid to stay at a 1.6 and run a used greddy kit?

My sis has an msm with little bolt on ****, and her bf has a 190whp mp62 1.8. Can a greddy with an FMIC and Megasquirt make enough power to safely keep up with them?

I was thinking about running a used greddy with fmic kit for around $1200 max, then running a bigger dp, and no cat, with 2.5" exhuast on a freshed up 1.6 auto (lower comp) motor...but them I'm getting into FM 1.8 kit price range...with a much more simple install.

Is there a manifold I can get for a 1.8 that will work with the greddy kit?

my current 1.6 has 140k on it, so I'm just going to pick up a spare motor and freshen it up, since I'll need a clutch anyway.

I want to make around 230whp when its done...I do NOT want to mess with overpowering drivetrain.

a GReddy with MS and supporting injectors & mods could be run at 14-16psi and run around 230-260rwhp easily.

basically running the kit on a 1.8 requires the hks manifold and exhaust work, and modifiying the intake and intercooler pipes.

I suspect this requires making the first ic pipe a bit taller, and trimmed going to the turbo, then the dp gets made taller and longer to attatch to the turbo located closer to the front on the manifold. I won't need an intake pipe since I'm running stand alone.

amirite?

You'll probably need a 1.8 rear, but the greddy + upgrades route is a lot cheaper and your car's lighter weight should make the 230whp a lot faster than they would be with the same power.

You can make 1.8L levels of power with slightly higher levels of boost (you have smaller head/pistons over 1.8L rods and a similar crank) and a little more lag. Realistically there isnt a ton of difference between running 15 and 18 psi if you have a properly sized turbo.

When I look at my student loan principle...the greddy kit at 8psi for a while looks like the best option.

greddy kit is absolutely not a stupid move. if they were, there would not be nearly as many in use by at least semi-intellegent people.

Doesn't the msm make like 150whp? I think that, with about -200lb would be alot of fun. Hell, even the stock msm seems fast to me.

stock MSM was never really impressive to me. Maybe if you take off the 17s, and pump up the boost a tad, but the little IHI turbo is still nothing special. I hear the 06 has a better power delivery.

...but is it a waste of money? I think I'm going to go that route, and just run like 10 psi on a 1.6 on ms. I don't think I'll ever really desire more than 230whp.

When I have a little more money to play with, I'll consider putting down more power. I think the greddy with an fmic, dp, no cat, 2.5" exhuast, 1.6 spec stage 2 clutch, and MS is the best and quickest decision. I only get 1 week off every other month where I travel, so I'd like to be able to do this **** quickly.

Thanks for the input guys, it just seems kinda dumb to start with the shitty motor, but is probably the easiest and most cost effective for now.

the 1.6 is a fine motor. spins faster and revs higher and happier than a 1.8.

Yeah, there's no way I'd say buying a Greddy kit for the 1.6L is a waste of money. It's a great starting point, and there's so much hardware (Tony's downpipe, BEGi's forthcoming downpipe, Racing Stripe's intercooler kit, etc.) that an upgrade path is assured.
