To egr or not to egr.
I have a 97 so I gotta deal with all the emissions non sense once a year. Im also a Jew and like to save money where I can. The decisions is saving the EGR and buying the 30 dollar fittings from begi or saving 30 and making a EGR block off plate.
My concern is check engine lights from blocking the egr and poor running without it.
What say you guys?

Does the EGR only open at idle or does it open at other times too?
I ask because I would like to know how sturdy the block off plate has to be, do I have to worry about leaking boost through it?

I get a code for no EGR every ~500 miles or so. I was able to time it just right last time i had my emissions test so it had been code free for a while, then I got the code again the next day. As mentioned above, the check engine light only comes on while cruising, and only every once in a while.

What's Begi charging 30 for??
The brass 90*?? Or the little flare thats supposed to go inside??
I'm sure you could find it at HD or local parts store for $3 no?
edit-just checked the site and its for both...I think u can still find those elsewhere.... I forgot u but the flare thing no mine...if I have no issues, just find the 90* and I'll give u my flare...
Does ur mani have the threaded hold for the egr fitting??

Yea, I have the bung in mine.
Anyone know the dimension of the EGR end of the 90 degree fitting. One end is 3/8npt.
I think I understand why that flare is included, seems to create a kind of compression fitting for the tube.

The egr valve reduces combustian temperatures below the point where NO2 is formed. It's nasty stuff and should be reduced if possable. If your EGR works i say leave it alone.
It also does help fuel economy slightly. Cooler combustian temperatures mean safely running more timing or running a little leaner.
Good alternatives = water or alcohol injection or e85.
