In all seriousness, however, congrats. You've recaptured some of the original cheap-*** spirit that MiataTurbo was founded upon way back before we all became wealthy turbo barons and MegaSquirt snobs.

One aspect of the project does concern me:

Placing an intercooler behind the radiator like that basically turns it into an interheater. In other words, all that warm air flowing into it from the radiator is going to pre-heat it, and thereby reduce or even eliminate its ability to remove heat from the intake air under boost.

If you can relocate the intercooler to a spot in front of the radiator, that would improve its performance considerably. Failing that, if it were my car I'd be tempted to remove it entirely, albeit after instrumenting the "before" and "after" pipes with some fast thermocouples just to see if it's doing anything beneficial at all.

Needs a heat shield for the brake master and lines.

Let's have some video, ey!

Lol no, because I first made a thread about running without BOV (to get some info) and people called me stupid and stuff like that. I guess I like too much to experiment cheap stuff hehe

Yeah good idea, also for the coolant hose that is really close to the downpipe. Okay I'll record a video this weekend!

my favorite part is the clear tube that goes into the idle valve.

Have you noticed those clear tubes to collapse under vacuum as the engine bay temp increases?

No, otherwise I would loose my idle and/or my boost would increase, depending on which hose you are talking about. Remember, it is about -10deg celcius or about 10-15*F here right now!

Thanks haha
Good point for the intercooler.
To be honest, I just wanted to see if the setup would work well enough to put more time and money into it. So yes in the futur I will consider relocating the intercooler. But as I said, keep in mind it is winter time here. Today is about 10-15*F so the rad doesn't become really hot. But I understand and agree with your theory.

you may actually gain power by just directly feeding the intake wihtout an intercooler
will also clean up the bay and further reduce the cost...if you can scrape the IC you may gain enough for a coca-cola.

anyways..does this **** run or what? VIDEOS!

hahaha, of course it runs!!
I think 10psi is too much to run without an intercooler. Anyway it is already installed. If the car looks like it wants to survive for a while, I'll buy an intercooler and piping kit.

Are you saying that your car doesn't reach normal operating temperature when it's cold out?

No. What I am saying is that it doesn't become as hot as in a hot summer day. The thermostat doesn't open as much as in summer time to allow the circulation of the coolant so I guess the temperature of the rad will remain "cooler" than in the summer. And with this freezing weather, I am pretty sure the air is still pretty cold even after going through the rad! If you noticed, I dont even have a fan anymore and it doesn't overtemp.

Don't trust the water temperature gauge on the dash. It IS wrong.

I ran 10psi without an intercooler. Just a stainless pipe going from one side to the other. Although, i was on MS and had better control of fuel and timing. It's plenty doable.

volvos advertised their cars as having INTERCOOLERS...pretty much turbos didn't have intercoolers back in the day

Really? Nice, good to know! I was wondering if it was doable before putting this one on. Yeah it's still safer to leave it there since my tuning is more than basic.

It is called Kenny U-pull, I guess that you have these or similar ones in the states. It's pretty cool, you just go there and dissmantle your parts yourself. It is really cheap. For example a turbo is 50$. Engine 200$. And there is a bunch of saab laying there and most of them are turbo!

I agree with the intercooler hate. With the temp of the air coming out of the radiator the IC is basically doing nothing and you probably wont lose any power just plumbing it straight. Getting it in front of the rad would be best. Also where the **** is your AFM? If you're running a dodo box you need to have the AFM and remember the AFM is effected by gravity and cornering/accel/decl so for it to work right you kind of have to have it orientated in more or less the same way as stock. People who MUST use the stock AFM and ECU due to their race class will actually spend hours on the dyno tweaking the orientation of the damn thing to find a few more horse power.

We can't see it on the picture, but don't worry, it's there. It is sitting in between the driver side shock tower and the firewall. The orientation is similar to the stock one.
