How much did you spend on your DIY turbo kit?
I compiled a list of the parts I need (almost straight from the DIY faq thread). The numbers add up to more than I was thinking I'd have to spend.
I am looking at getting a 1999 or 2000 Miata and adding the following parts. The prices are for USED PARTS except for the clutch. The work would be done by me, since this is the DIY section. From what I've been reading, the components below (when tuned) should put me at 200-230whp. It is essentially a BEGI S2 kit with the S4 manifold.

Quality parts, clutch, radiator, ECU, LC-1, gauges, $4k isn't really all that outrageous. When you consider the same kit from BEGi or FM would cost you 6-8k, 4k looks pretty sweet. You can spend lots less if you have a ton of time, a welder, and some skills, but if you're looking to bolt together known-good parts then $4k is about right.

I'm just over 3k in my setup. Full DIY put together kit that includes MSPnP, BB Turbo, External wastegate and a full interior restoration. It can be done for cheap. You have to be patient.
It's all about the USED PARTS. Shop smart and look for parts atleast once a day because the deals DO go fast.

I see that a couple of you are recommending the MS for engine management. I don't know much about it really. I don't think that 99+ Miatas have a compatible engine management that is what I'd call cheap. Maybe I need to do some more reading in that area.
I do like the fact that I can add some sensors and have a functional, programmable traction control with the Adaptronic.

Depending on how DIY you want to go, I have just under $1500 in mine, however that's with an ebay BOV and turbo.
But I still have a large IC, 550cc injectors, standalone MS, 3" turbo back exhaust, AEM WB, and external WG so it's not like it's a bandaid or ragged setup.
Note: That's minus the clutch, I already had that from previous setup

Dude you can build a DIYPNP standalone with the optional seq card and an electronic boost control solenoid, and only be in it for about $500. I'm not sure what your definition of cheap is, but it meets mine. You can find my build thread in the MS section.

Started with a $750 used greddy kit because it was my first turbo kit and I wanted to take baby steps with the upgrades for the benefit of learning along the way.
Now I'm at $2950, and that includes every single turbo related bit - like wideband, better spark plugs, everything - and after several hours dyno tuning I'm at 206 RWHP. (dyno tuning costs are not included in that total)
The only parts left from the greddy kit are the turbo itself, the manifold, and the wastegate.
Working right now on buying a water injection kit (~$250) and then I'll be going to 14 psi.

My '99, let see...SR20 turbo $200, rebuild kit $80, Fm mani, DP, and outlet $800, midpipe used $200, Muffler and pipes, $400? IC, BOV and piping used (old FMII kit) $200, Custom MS so far $700, LC-1 $200, gauges and pod $200?, GM IAT, RX-7 460's, misc ****, $300...so like 3 grand-ish? AND I STILL NEED A CLUTCH AND EBC!!! Figure 4 grand tops for a stock internaled car that ***** **** up all day.

yea the biggest chunks for my turbo were the turbo itself and then the engine management. The biggest thing to remember is that a lot of the DYI'ers count the total cost of their turbo setup to include all things power related that went into making the car work properly with X amount of power. Wideband, engine management, clutch, spark plugs, boost controller, bigger exhaust, etc. are things we often count in our costs that, if you were to buy a kit, you would still need to buy seperate. DIY saves a good deal of $$.

Makes me feel pretty lucky I only paid $2,200 for my entire car, w/ the turbo and goodies on it. Of course, it didn't run at that time but, I've got about $2,400 in it and it needs about $200 put in it still to be road worthy. This is w/ ebay manifold, turbo, FMIC, BOV, and E-Manage Blue. I do not think there's a clutch in there yet and I've got an open diff.
