Default How bad of an idle/off boost?

Well I just got maximum boost and was reading through it today and it reminded me of something that I had kind of forgotten, off boost driving.

The setup that I am planning on running is voodoo box+bipes and 305cc injectors, which as I have been told can be idled by the stock ecu. But how rough is the idle with the 305's? I hadn't really given that much thought as I just knew that it could be done, but now I am curious as to what I can expect at idle and in off boost situations. Will I run all shitty off boost?? Will the car feel sluggish with these injectors?

If that turns out to be the case then I was thinking about getting a fpr along with the voodoo/bipes and using stock injectors to try and keep driveability good as both the fpr and voodoo would be working only in boost, and the ecu would be fine with the stockers.

But that raises the question of why not just go standalone like ms or something along those lines? The voodoo box is worth ~$250, bipes ~$150, 305cc's ~$50, FMU ~$100, then a 190hp pump for the increased pressure ~$100...
Thats $650 invested in this band-aid based setup.

Its still less than a MS pnp (barely), but for that an AEM f/ic is very atainable, allong with some 460 or 550's, which would get me closer to ~240whp (if thats the max of the stock internals).

So i don't really know where to go from here. I think I may just stick with the simple voodoo/bipes to start and learn on as I already have them, then see if the idle/driveability is ueber shitty or not. After that I'll see where my funds take me.

I'd just like to hear what some of you think about the outcome of the said setup. Would a FMU make 220 or so to the wheels attainable with the 'box and bipes?

ya theres no reason an FMU coudnt make 220, 240, or even higher at the wheels that I can see. It would take the right adjustments with big enough injectors and the timing adjusted appropriately. On the other hand you might experience some drivability problems that would probably lead me to rip the rest of the hair on my balding head out (with tweezers since I keep it real short). My experience with an FMU/bipes setup didnt make me very happy unless I was full throttle and above 4k rpm. Now I have Megasquirt and while I still dont make much power below 4k, at least it is for the most part smooth. This took some tuning time to achieve though but should be easier now that you can copy the diyautotune maps now.

You forgot about an O2 clamp to keep your tip-in from going lean. Just get the MSPNP. I quickly realized when I was doing my setup that the bandaids were going to be just as expensive and far, far less tuneable. I can idle 460s, 550s, 750s all day long.

The voodoo box has an o2 clamp built in. I would like to get the MSPNP but there isn't one out quite yet for the 96-97 and the point of a pnp to me is no wiring. Hopefully by the time the 97 pnp comes out I'll have the adequate $$ for it +some big injectors. As I said, I already have the voodoo/bipes/305's so I'll try that, but its good to hear another MS vote.

My '96 idles 305s no problem, just kinda rich sometimes. Off boost driving it's right around stoich like it should be.

Thats a relief to hear. Well then if 305's don't make the car crapulant, then voodoo/bipes/305's it is until there is a mspnp for 96-97 and I have enough $$ to get one. I may even add a used fpr that I can sell for close to what I bought it for, just to see if that setup satisfies me.

Thanks for the help.

run what you have for now, but def. get the 96-97 PNP when it's released.

you should expect an idle/drivability just as well as stock.
