Default "normal" coolant temperature ?

Hi guys,

Can anyone tell me what coolant temp is normal for the miata?

the temperatures are with mostely driving in town.
current my car does about 105 dergees celcius. I have the stock fan and the ac fan wired in parallel. So they swith on at 97 degrees.
The needle of the gauge in the cockpit is in the middle.

If I remember corretly, the temp was before the install of the turbo about 97 degrees.

I'm not sure to what temperature is still good, and what value is to high and needs adjustment of I/C or radiator.

Mine usually runs at 104 or 105. Thermostat opens at 97. Even with the big Koyo running at -10*c ambient last winter it ran 104. It's normal.

According to Megatune, mine sits between 212-215*F. I always thought that was kind of high. Makes me wonder if the sensor is bad, or if I should have the fans turn on sooner.

MS stops outputting higher at 215*F... that's about the temp the needle starts moving towards the middle of the oem gauge. Fans kick on at 207*F

My car was hovering right around 205-210. I switched out my thermostat to a 180, and now it is in the 192-197 range on megatune.

I hover right around 190* when its above 90*. When its 80* or lower my temps hang just below 180*.

My NB with a big radiator and two parallel wired Spal fans runs between 93-100 degrees. I often reach the 97 degree fan switching point, but they cool the temps down quite fast.

Is it right to make the conclusion that with stock radiator and no reroute the temp is about 104 degrees celcius, like Stein said?
And.. with a different radiator or/and its about 10 degrees celcius lower?

Spookyfish can you PM or mail me pictures of your solution?

I think that we need to tell the OP if we are running stock thermostat or 180*

I'm on stock.

Since I own the car I never replaced it, so it must be stock.

Also it looks like the NBs may have a higher temp than the NAs.

Looking on a site for aftermarket replacementparts I saw what Zaphod sayd.
The NA summer thermostat is 82 degrees celcius, and for the NB its 86 degrees. So I also conclude that the NB has a slightly higher engine temp.

Today I also looked in my garage for the type of coolant that I have used. Its agip permenant coolant. It has gravity 1.078 , so it probably a mixture of aprox. 50/50.
What I want to do, when I also replace the timingbelt, to exchange the thermostat to a summer model and use a coolant with gravity 1.06. (60 water/ 40 coolant)

Okay, Yesterday I did a highway drive for about 10 minutes. The temp whas between 100C (217F) and 110C (239F). It is really fluctuating, so I suppose there is a possibilty that there is some air in the system or that the mixture starts boiling.

Because its far beyond the point that the fan switches, it bothers me. I think it is not normal that with out side temp of 20C (43F) the fan never stops.

What my plan is to do: put in a new thermostat with some extra holes drilled in it, to get extra flow, and a other mixture of coolant with higher level of distilated water.

My setup is the stock cooling with the waterlines for the turbo connected the way it is explaned in the big FAQ post.
