Default Big Turbo Noob...

I have my 2002 ls for a little over a year now. Done my suspension, brake, and wheel/tire upgrades. Ill post a picture of my car. So now Im beginning to get a bit bored with the lack of power. Im not looking for a huge power increase because it is my daily driver. Looking for a reliable 140hp to 160hp. So obviously the Shanghai-S Turbo System is what Ill be purchasing. Ive been doing alot of reading and everything and trying to keep the price as low as possible but want it done right. My car has 101,000 miles, Bone stock motor, has had regular synthetic oil changes, good gas, just had timing belt and water pump done, all new belts, I will be doing a compression test soon to make sure shes good to go. Plan on sticking with stock ecu if thats cool So here is the list of stuff Ill be adding with the system...

-Wideband 02 plug
-T2871 turbo
-BEGi fuel system
-Bypass valve
-Oil pan drill and tap
-All stainless braid lines
-Seperated gases downpipe (mild steel)
-Oil drain line
-Boost Gauge
-May add intercooler

So stock ecu, good motor. What about tuning and everything with stock ecu

So I do have experience working on cars etc. So Im comfortable doing the install myself, just want to double check with you guys before I start to order stuff. Just let me know what you think. Thanks

If you only want 160whp, which is dog slow, just get MS2 or MS3, I/H/E.

Well Ive never driven or been in a turbo miata, to me it seems like having an extra 30 to 50hp would make a pretty decent increase, but I guess it doesnt...

Add clutch and megasquirt and you'll have a healthy 200hp, which is lots funner then stock.

.....and I'm not even one of the guys that picks on this kind of stuff. Its just the only thing I got from your post.

To add. A 180whp miata is fun, no doubt about it, but a 250whp miata is a WHOLE LOT more fun!

Thanks for the feeback guys. I would love to go all out and have 250+hp but this is my daily driver on all stock internals and Id like to keep it as reliable as possible. 180hp sounds pretty good to me. Also trying to keep price down.

So is it cool to stick with stock ecu with the BEGi fuel system or should I defiantly go with the megasquirt?

And a 500hp is more than 2x more fun than 250hp. More like 8x as fun.

See I disagree with you there. Granted, I have yet to drive a 500whp miata, but I assume with that much power its almost undriveable on a day to day basis.

At one point I was DD'ing mine all year round.

OP - If I had it to do ALL over again, I'd start first and foremost with MS. As you learn it, build your turbo kit. Contact Abe (ARTech) or Tim (Absurdflow) and have them make you a mani/dp combo, add an exhaust if you can swing the extra cash. Hunt the classifieds/vendors on here to pick up all the odds and ends like injectors, torsen, clutch, etc.

In the long run you'll have saved quite a bit of money VS buying a pre packaged kit and you'll have a setup that will be very flexible in terms of "moar power" when that time comes.

I am starting to think thatd be a good idea for, just piecing my own setup together over a period of time and once i get everything just throw it together. I had a friend that did the same with his KA-T 240sx and saved him ALOT of money in the end.

No, it's not undriveable at all. Scott and others who have gotten ride alongs in my car have commented on how good the low end is. Big turbo = flow. FWIW in 1:1 gear I make 1psi at 2400RPM.

Same deal as 250hp miata-- you just don't go WOT all the time. BTW @ 500HP you will prob have 400TQ which means you can run an ACT XT sprung 6 puck disc. That is a very daily driveable clutch. I DD'd the organic disc which felt nearly identical for 3 years @ 250hp.

You also don't have to run a 4" exhaust for 500hp. E85 or WI? Probably but WI is easy peasy.

maybe I am missing something, but a T2871, for 180 hp?
wouldn't you want something like a T2560 instead?

1.8+VVT+2871 is not laggy at all.
And I'm almost positive OP will want more power within a week (if he's a man)

Yeah Ill just go with t25. Any advice on tuning with BEGi fuel system and stock ecu? And before turbo stuff is installed i figured id go ahead and do head gasket and intake gaskets etc. Any suggestions on head gaskets?

Good point. After I feel what 160 to 180 feels like I will probably want more

First I'd research a little more.
Then I'd leave your gaskets alone. Just tap your oil pan and install the turbo and all the hardware.
How are you retarding timing?
I'm assuming the BEGI "fuel system" adds fuel pressure in boost? F that POS. Get a voo-doo box at least.
Seriously though, you need a not stock ECU if you ever want to see anything good for your engine that lays down over 170whp.
Best advice: If you don't want to spend the money and do it right, don't do it at all.

The ONLY reason I see keeping the stock ECU is if you must have it to pass emissions.
