Get him to sell his first two at 300. Even tunertoys a well reputed company had people in the miata community test their oil drain kits out because they had never served that market before.
He currently has you to vouch for him, now he needs two more people to really get into the market with a good reputation. Small price to pay to have people know you and buy your products.

are you guys kidding me? i wouldn't even make a simple log manifold for less than $275. anyone who thinks they can make those for $200 is smoking crack... if that manifold is done with stainless pipe, $500 is a great deal. don't sell them for less than that... if you do, then you will get swamped with orders, not be able to keep up and then all your customers who are waiting months to get a manifold will get super pissed and your reputation from impatient people who start threads about you will scare away all your business. trust me, i've seen a few other people try to start up their own manifold company and have that exact thing happen... and a lifetime warranty doesn't mean **** if the company that made it is gone 3 months after you bought the manifold.

realistically 400 would be a price to start for custom fabrication in my opinion. at leas get some to be tested. plus you are getting warranty. damn . options!!! even 400 is conservative. unless he is using the smaller runners. with 1.5 runners it would be a good *** deal and you would not have to brace that **** like the ebay junk.

I agree $200 is ridiculous for the amount of time and skill it takes to put something like this together correctly. I do however thing it would be good to make a few at lower cost, see it as a group buy or something just to get people familiar with his product.

BTW, thanks for you welding advice on HMT.

Please confirm that this is the manifold that cracked on you. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Turbo...spagenameZWDVW

Yes that is the manifold that cracked on him.

FWIW, ETD racing is selling this shorty manifold in mild steel for $450 plus shipping. Then its another $50 to get them to add the external wastegate flange. Your pricing of $500 for a manifold is not ridiculous by any means.

I think even Rob at Flipside customs charges $800+ for his stainless flanged ramhorn manifold, that is full stainless though including head and turbo flange.

I had thought it was this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/97-01...spagenameZWDVW

The auction for the $130 one is a new appearance, and they're lame enough to use BEGI's actual photos. Look at the auxiliary piping, and the welds at the top of the 2/3 runners.

Corky's manifold is a steal for what it is. It's hard for me to understand doing anything else on a 1.8.

All of the ebay asian manifolds are made with cheap thinwall tubing and tend to crack. It's up to you what manifold you choose to run.

If you properly brace an ebay manifold you might get some good life out of it and they might be cheap enough for you to take the time to try one. I prefer to buy a quality piece the first time though, at least when it comes to something as important as the manifold.

I can't agree more. Especially about the smoking crack part.

It seems that alot of people don't understand the amount of work and time it takes to make a good manifold. I've seen many make cheap DIY manifolds, but they look like **** and have nasty welds and cracks.

Good, Fast, Cheap - Pick two. Impossible to have all 3 at the same time.

I was saying $600 for one-offs, probably going to be around $500 for Paul's once I get around to making some more templates.

EDIT: For people wanting a $200 manifold: For Paul's mild steel manifold, my raw material costs were $178, so you're close to $200 even before any metal is cut. (This included the $75 shipped ETD flange; for the next manifolds I'm using the Weir flange at $22 plus shipping.) Electricity & 3 cutoff wheels was estimated around $40, so he was at $218 before any labor costs. There's a shitton of labor involved in doing a manifold properly. No, I don't work for free, even for Paul.

and there ya have it. my estimates of those other costs was low. i'd now call someone an idiot to sell something like this for less than 400...

well well well...I stand corrected, but I still am a cheap *******.
You know, if this guy was well established, I am sure people will not mind paying 400-500 for his manifold given it is proven and he becoes reputable on here, otherwise, I still don't see it. Tim, you are a different story, we all know what you build and the kind of quality is associated with it, everyone here will pay you $500 over this guy any day.

500 in the set price... i'm the one who is testing the mani and maybe he'll get some one else to test for the 1.6. this guy is very very reputable here in orlando for fabrication, wiring harness, performance engine build, custom turbo kits for car and motorcycles, ect.
so if anyone wants one let me know were going to be ordering some flanges from "wier" in a couple of days and start making some

+1 if anyone wonders go ask a weld shop how much they charge an hour for custom welding **** and add up all the expenses. any manifold below 400-500 tells me it is garbage. you can be a cheap *** but this is one of the things you buy and forget about, i certainly don't want to touch it once it is on the car any more
