It's true you'll have more stock options to choose from if you have access to EDM. I would at least compare the cost of the heat treated alloy to the cost of having a box full of blanks heat treated. You'll save some money buying untreated stock, though that won't be enough to cover the heat treating. At least make a comparison and then decide.

I'll default to your more expert judgment, and I would think that pretty much any stock we'd use would be a better choice than sintered steel.

True. For what we're doing buying heat treated stock or having it heat treated isn't going to make a difference. It's simpler and cheaper (should be) to just buy treated stock and EDM it, that's the way to do it. I'm just overthinking things as usuall, so ignore all my talk about heat treating the blanks and just do what you know will work. These gears will be 3-4 times stronger than sintered gears without any heat treating.

do you? how soon? my "to be built motor" is still in one assembly, but if no one has one any sooner than i can get around to getting it out, i will ship mine as soon as i get it out...you can count on me if no one has one now...
im getting very excited about this option...but you'd have to at least secure a spot for me once "production" starts

I don't think your gonna bend sintered parts much without breaking them, but that wouldn't matter would it you guys just wanted to test it's hardness or something, right? Just go bet some stock and make some gears!!! I'm standing in line.

You could also see if FM will send you one from their salvage... They might do it for uber cheap/free since they're throw away parts and they're moving anyway.
