Loki, if you are running into a bottleneck, I can probably get a set run through our optical Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) and generate data to within .0005" or so. You would have good data for the model. Got to get the clearances right before launching into prototypes. I don't think you will get there with a scanner.

Loki, once Stein has the data to you, what do you have to do then? Take said data to machinist and find out how hard they want to ram our buttholes? If that's all then woohoo. Have you found a machinist yet?

Unless something has changed... do you remember the first post... where he has access to the equipment?

only a few pages back he said something about finding machinist...maybe that was just to consult about materials...

edit-5. Take model to machinist get cost estimate.

A machinist is what I have, its getting time to generate the model is where I have been lacking. I even figured out a way to cut alot of our cost down in the machining process. I just don't have an accurate model I would feel comfortable putting in the engine. My modeling pro got stuck in Peoria for a few months so when we hang out the last thing we want to do is work on modeling.

haha, i hear ya, time is what we are all lacking...unfortunately!
So what Stein suggested, will that take care of that issue? Is what he can do gonna take us to the next step?
I mean it sounds like it, but this all way over my head.

Stein will provide the model and I can get them machined. Unless he just disappears with the gears and we are back where we started. Dirty Nebraska

lol, I don't think Stein would do that to us, we'll send Hustler after him, and he does not want to meet Hustler.
Man, this sounds good, I'm getting excited again.

Stein, how soon do you think you can you get the modeling done? Please say "In no time" I'm sure Loki would overnight the gears in this case, won't you Loki?

Loki:

Ship the gears to my work address. I will generate all of the dimensions and y8s will generate the model in Pro E from my dimensions. They will be ready to manufacture when we are done with them.

stein, are you using an optical comparator or something? just curious.

Much better. It is a 400x Optical Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) Works like a normal CMM but completely non-contact. The camera focuses on the edge of the part and measurements are taken. VERY accurate. THe machine is accurate to 50 millionths of an inch--overkill in this case, as we are measuring "one" set of gears that could be at the upper end of the original manufacturing tolerance or at the bottom. We will never know. Also, is the set I am measuring new or used? Would hate to measure a used set and tolerance "into" the parts 30K of wear.

Here's what we will be using to measure the parts, if anyone rally cares about stuff like this.

http://www.ramoptical.com/roiSystemsSprintCNC200.jsp

About 60K for the unit.

Its a used set of gears. I was hoping to have a few more sets to measure against. But for now I feel comfortable make the prototype set off of the used gears. I will UPS the gears on Monday when I am in the office.

Stein will you share the dimensions with me as well? I wouldnt mind practicing with solid works a little bit more.

So that's how they do sample testing of hypodermic needles, that is awesome. I've only been around touch type CMMs and I thought they were the coolest thing around, this is so much better.

nice. we had a ram at my last job (medical devices).

very nice to use. lay your part down (or stick it to some clay) and you can mark edges of lines or holes and get diameters or locations or whatever you want.

The OP gears have about 120K on them. Sorry, that's all i had
I don't see it neccasary for them to be much more accurate than a set of old used gears as the typical failure is not due to wear but rather stress. If you would like, i need to buy a new OP, i may be able to ship you the brand new gear in it as well, but that could further delay us since I have not even bought nor priced out the OP yet. Let me know and I'll see what i can do.

Loki, i hope this entitles me to a free set of the gears then , well, I'll pay shipping and materials offcourse.
