Default t2554 or t3 super 60?

Quick turbo suggestions. Of the above two options, on a 1.6 what would be your choice and why. I have narrowed it down to one of the two most likely, but would like some opinions. Thanks

My opinion: t3.

Someone is going to ask your power goals and all that other crap and then tell you the other one will suffice, but eventually you'll want that t3.

Both are good choices for different reasons.

Personally, the 1.6 doesn't come alive until 4000 even under boost, so I use the larger turbo.

i Would go T3 , in fact...I did. If it wasn't for me finding a really sweet deal on an AVO kit I would be working on my T3 set up. Not that I have a problem using a T2, but I would have chosen the T3 as my ideal turbo.

It's your decision but a lot more of the guys here are moving to T3's. I have one for sale (shameless plug) under the user name Tomwa, account got too buggy to deal with.

That's a tough call really as they are both great turbos with different strengths.

I'd say 250hp is really pushing it for the gt2554r as the max I've heard of was somewhere in the 230 ballpark and that was with a larger 1.8 engine and better 99 head. I believe that emilio and kags from m.net got similar numbers out of their 1.8 setups. However, if you really don't want to have to upgrade the big stuff (rear end, rods, transmission) then this a great turbo for awesome streetability and 200-ish hp.

T3 and larger is where you can easily make north of 250hp and this is where things can start getting expensive in terms of other parts of the car breaking down or probably needing to be replaced sooner rather than later such as the rear end, tranny, internals, etc... That being said, this is where the fun begins!

Highly recommend seeing if anyone in your area has one to take for a test drive as they have different power delivery. For a DD, I'd use a gt2554r, but for a track/weekend/fun car, I'd use a bigger turbo. YMMV.

True, but it'll "not come alive" under 4000 RPM better with the smaller turbo.

In all seriousness, even though the 1.6 doesn't come on cam until then, it'll still scoot pretty good below 4000 RPM with some boost.

The only time I think I'd rather have a 2554 is at an autocross. But then I'd just rather have a coldside blower. i got a 2560, but sometimes i even wonder about a 2871 or 3071.

I run a gt25r. It's a great little turbo at 8psi. If you're looking for instant boost, this is the turbo for you. Honestly, I could live with a little lag driving around town. 'Normal' driving is a bitch with this turbo. We'll see how happy I am this summer at 12psi. I have a feeling a bigger turbo is in my future.

Stripes, why do you say "'Normal' driving is a bitch?"

I recently drove a GT2554R with 5psi, I liked it, it was just a nice little turbo that gave it power throughout the powerband. It's a totally different beast compared to my Super 60. If it was a pure DD or autox car, then I'd go with a GT, if you're looking for lots of power (heck mines even a perfectly civilized DD) then go with the T3.

Personally I'd like to have two miatas, one with each.

There is zero lag with my setup. If I want to stay out of boost for whatever reason, I have to be very light with the gas pedal. This is a rare occasion, but I could see myself liking a touch of lag.

Looking at the map the GT2252 owns the GT2554.

A little more forgiving where you might get surge, less likely to hit the point of choke flow, and 8 points higher as far as efficiency...
