BTW, just got my new camcorder yesterday (Canon ZR500 - thanks to the many on this board who recommended that model) so you can probably expect a few videos of the car some time in the near future.

Yep, Ebay special. A few days ago I got the car running after sitting for about 5 months. I checked the manifold for leaks and did not find any. I did all the welding myself the last time and hopefully the leaks are gone forever.

slow hotel connection. just watched it.

what kind of exhaust do you run? was it the shorty under-car dump tube with cherry bomb and turn-down tip?

I ask because I wonder if it's getting that hot because of a restriction in the exhaust (or turbo) or maybe it's running lean?

that's crayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyzy.

I think a part of it is the metal used in the manifold. Fairly thin isn't it?

Where's that smoke coming from on throttle let-off?

The manifold glowed red because:
1) I was running extremely lean to the point that my Link removed all timing retard after 6000 rpm (HP just fell on it's *** after then).
2) My screwy EBC let me run up to 18 PSI on a tiny turbo

The smoke is from bad blowby coming out a K&N filter on the cam cover. At the autox you can watch my car leave a puff of smoke every time I shift. I'll be making my DIY catch can today.

It might be as much from the full spark retard as the lean mixture. Too much spark retard = high EGTs.

look at his dynograph, his power drops to nothing as he knocks:

knock in red:

no power after 6k:

major retarding = high EGTs

Yeah ignition retard is a great thing for warding off detonation but too much causes....detonation, overheating, melted stuff and general shittyness.

Intake manifold glowing. ROFL.

I hope you fix your issues, no manifold is supposed to glow like that after such a short period of time.

that's a lot of retard. probably turned the manifold into a combustion chamber

If you properly routed your breather filter to a source of constant vacuum in front of the turbo compressor inlet, you'd have less pressure in the crankcase, and the effects of blowby would be less pronounced.
