Default Hello/turbo ?

Im new here and I come from the DSM World (1992 AWD turbo Laser). I Just purchased a 95 miata I plan to turbo. I have a question about the Engine management for adding a turbo. It looks like you can just use a mechanical fmu up to a certain point. When do you need to step up to electronic management Example(emanage-voodo box?) what psi max on the fmu? Also the voodo box from fm looks like the way i would want to go. But with a dsm you can datalog right out of the factory service port. What are the alternatives to datalog on a miata. Im searching and reading but having trouble finding this info.

there are a LOT of different configurations. it is going to depend on the amount of power you will want to run. some people are running impressive power with 1.8 injectors, an FMU, emanage, O2 clamp and autotune. a stronger fuel pump may also be needed. you can also run an FMU, Bipes timing controller, and fuel pump. there are many standalone ECUs available too. i don't know if the emanage allows datalogging. i know the Link does.

like i mentioned, it's going to depend on the amout of powr you wish to attain, and your budget, of course.

Im wanting to stay around 2k to get the setup on. As far as power, Im unsure of because I havent read enough. I was looking at walbro fuel pumps but was unsure if i would have a problem with overrun on the injectors. I was thinking about a 255 walbro, FMU and Bipes. But It scares me not having anyway to know what the car is doing-to rich or to lean- How do you determine this just running fmu and Bipes. Because im guessing with emanage you could have to laptop hooked up and see live data. Im wanting to obtain the most power i can with in my budget, Im confused on what size turbo i want to use cause there is so many options. I have seen t-25,t-3/4, 16g ,14b. Not having much luck finding manifolds though. How much power can be achived with a T-25 on these cars?

get a wideband, as far as a turbo setup. If I knew what I was doing when I started I wish I went with a begi manifold and a T3 turbo

A Wide Band and the begi manifold/t3 is most likely going to break my budget along with all the other parts im going to need.
For now I want something to make to car more fun. Then work my way up to a bigger setup.
Will a 1.6 manifold fit on a 1.8 engine? I notice they make alot more manifolds and kits for a 1.6 it looks like.

NO, in fact, just about the only thing that is different is the Manifold itself. I think the Begi is still in your pricerange though.
Begi Mani/DP: $750 shipped
Used SR20det T25: $50+$75(rebuild kit): $125
Used Bipes: $175
Used 1.8 inj's: $50
2.5" IC setup: $250
Bosch BOV: $50
MBC: $50
Oil/Water lines: $100
Used Begi AFPR: $175 (on a 1.8 not sure)
Walbro 190hp: $80
Random vacuum lines, DF fuel rail parts, BOV hose, random fittings, etc...: $75
You've still got $150 for pop-up expenses.

I'm gonna throw out a random number here and say that on a 1.8 w/the above setup running 8-9psi, you could see 175rwhp, maybe near 200@10-11psi and good tuning w/a full exhaust/no cat.

You could go significanlty more budget and go w/just the Turbo/DP/Mani/CrossoverPipe(w/BOV)/ and a little sumthin' for fuel. Keep your timing pulled and skip the IC and fancy crap for 5-6psi and a good 150rwhp.

Check out this thread:
https://www.miataturbo.net/forums/showthread.php?t=4455
It's primarily a 1.6 homework thread, but almost everything translates to 1.8 motors. Like others said, you've got to pick a power goal. $2k is quite doable sourcing used parts and using a traditional setup. The classifieds here, miata.net, ebay, etc... are good sources.

Also, when planning for your power, don't foget a Miata weighs in about 1000lbs less than your DSM's. 200rwhp goes A LONG way. I think that's probably a good number for 1.8 guys to aim for with an "up there" mechanical setup or budget eManage setup.

What is the current mod status of your '95? Give us a list of eveything so far.

Miatas are as much about handling as power, so don't forget a good set of rubber, maybe some lightweight wheels to go along with them, shocks, swaybars, rollbar, and a few other things. Budget about $350 for a clutch no matter what! Welcome!

Disclaimer: I'm not a 1.8 guy. I've spread my purchasing out over about the last 2-3 months... even though I think I'm closing in on $1800, it doesn't seem like that much.

or... you could just buy this and call it a day: https://www.miataturbo.net/forums/showthread.php?t=4949

My car is stock right now. I have had it for a couple days. The first thing I plan to get is a Roll Bar of some sort, Havnt decided which design. The t-25 set-up you have seems like a good idea. As far as manifolds there doesnt seem to be much choice. Does anyone make one with a mitsu flange on it. So you could run 14b,16g,20g turbos? Im just afriad I might max out the T-25 set up really quick. But this seems like the most affordable route.

samnavy, he doesn't need 1.8 Injectors because his car already has em.

Dsturgeon: I came from the DSM world myself owned 2 1Gs and a GVR4. How much HP are you aiming for? the "DSM" mitsu flange (which I'm guessing you're thinking about is a T2 flange, so I think (I could be wrong) the Begi mani can accomodate DSM turbos.

nester has a mitsu flnage manidfold i think it is a one off but he owns a tunning company so he could make another maybe ask him and begi could make you a custom manifold. as for the limits of a fmu andyfloyd made 300 whp on a fmu and rx7 maf i would say 220 or os is the maxe for 1.,8 injectors and a walboro 190 hp. WI can help alot as well as a very efficient IC. i hope to make atleast 250 whp on mine next weekend with just a fmu12-1, WI, some 310's a walboro 255 hp and rx7 maf. this is at 12-13 psi on a small 16g. i managed 200 whp dynojet equivalent on it at 8psi, with 1.6 injectors and stock pump and fmu. and nester did about the same with his evo 3 but he runs an emanage so it is abit different.

WHAT? You mean 1.8 motors come with 1.8 injectors... I get so excited sometimes. Like this little guy:

Check this thread for the difference between MHI (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) and Garrett (what we call standard) T25 flanges. I'm not sure Begi makes a Mitsu flanged T25 manifold. https://www.miataturbo.net/forums/sh...t=mitsu+flange

You can purchase an adapter to mate a DSM Mitsu turbo to a Standard Garrett T25 manifold. I think this is it, but I have no experience with this. I came across is in my research at some point: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HF-Ma...spagenameZWDVW

But I think you'd be better off sourcing an SR20det turbo which uses the standard flange... unless you've got your heart set on the DSM compressor housing... like I do.

The reason i would like to go with a mistu flange us because im afriad i would max out the t-25 quickly , whats the max output for hp on a t-25 on the miata. Because it is real easy to max one out on a dsm. Thats why i would like to find a way to make a 16g work on this car. Lets say im shooting for 250hp. Can this be accomplished on a t-25 sr20 turbo? I know the spool up would be quick. Which would be great. Thanks everyone for your help also. Keep the good info comming.

I'm sure it's possible, but that'll be the max for a stock sr20det T25. You'll also have to go w/some serious engine management. It'd be easy to do w/a Link or Hydra. I'm sure an eManage ultimate would get you there.

A T-28 would be a great turbo for the 250hp range w/a Link and some big injectors. The Begi Mani and divorced wastegate DP w/a nice 2.5" exhaust would be a quick-spooling little monster.
