would you add an intercooler?
i have a small turbo on my 90 (not sure what turbo) that does not have an intercooler. i get about 5-6psi max. it runs with a 5th injector before the intake manifold. i am thinking of putting in an intercooler.
1. any idea of what that will do for the performance?
2. i have an oil cooling unit in front of my radiator that takes up a small space. would and intercooler and the oil unit starve the radiator? or should i pull out the oil unit?
3. what size intercooler is suggested (if at all)?

Intercoolers are outmoded. Just get a PC-Pro (or two!) to solve all your problems. In fact, you could probably replace your entire engine with an array of PC-Pros.
Just kidding
The setup here: http://www.mx5projects.com seems to be pretty popular (maybe because a forum member sells the IC piping there). FWIW, I'm definitely going that route.

if you dont know what turbo is on your car i would not even consider doing any upgrades to your system...learn exactly what you have and then learn how you can upgrade it or make it better...then, dont come back asking how to mount the IC because its all in the SEARCH bud

im sure if you stick an intercooler in the mix you'll receive a bit of power (same boost measrued at IM), not much. but what you do walk away with is cooler intake temps (& denser air). so you can increase the timing advance a bit or even increase the boost if you have enough fuel.

It sounds like you need to do a lot more homework into what exactly you have currently and the capabilities of IT before you do anything else. Do you have a dyno plot or know anything about the tune?
Are you sure it's an oil cooler in front of your rad? It probably is, but people have done weirder things to Miatas? There's a PS cooler kit out there too.
Do you have AC or PS?
The fifth injector setup you're using does two things.
#1: It allows you to use an otherwise stock fuel system. Adding the fifth injector alleviates the need for bigger main injectors, and AFPR, or a fuel pump... at the low boost levels you're running.
#2: Anytime you atomize a liquid into air, it has a cooling effect on the air. There's a company out there that makes superchargers and advertises their fifth injector setup as an intercooler substitute due to the large amount of cooling the fuel provides when it's injected into the airstream pre-manifold. (Hence, Spikes' joke).
It actually works really well up to the point where the air coming from the turbo is simply too hot... like when you turn up the boost... but then even a large 550cc RC engineering injector (like I suspect you've got) won't provide enough extra fuel anyways... so you need more.
An intercooler will provide the extra charge cooling you're looking for to be able to turn up the boost. But then your limiting factor is fuel. You need to know the limits of the fuel system you're running... which is why you need to research exactly what you've got. If that extra injector isn't big enough or the controller for it has limited adjustability or is fixed, turning up the boost, no matter how cool the charge air is will still run you lean. And you still need to tune it once you turn up the boost.
Take some pics for us and post them up and we can help tell you what you've got and where your next step should be if you're looking for more power. Also, tell us what you're looking for... is it just another psi or two of boost, or are you looking to run 10-12psi or what?

from the casting on the outside it has "airesearch m10" on it. i believe it was originally for a nissan 240. i have been trying to track down exactly what it is, but have not nailed it down yet. unfortunately the guy who did the turbo work passed away about a year ago....hence how i inherited the car.
the only paperwork i have is for the 5th injector and its just the install manual. the manual states that unit allows you to run your stock motor and injectors.
it is an oil cooling unit i have in front of the radiator.
any ideas what exactly this is?

You can fit a fairly large intercooler if you're not running AC. If you do plan on keeping your AC, you may have to run an intercooler like the one suggested off my site or smaller. Any size intercooler can fit with enough determination.
Search some of M2cupcar's threads. A few month's ago he was getting creative with his intercooler and oil cooler placement.
