Am I doing this right the first time?
I have a '99 NB 1.8 with 160k miles and I am looking into turbocharging the car in the future. It is a daily driver but it doesn't see a ton of miles, I am wanting to attend the occasional autocross but mostly I am looking for a reliable daily with some extra power.
This is my proposed list at the moment, the budget is up in the air but I would rather do things correct the first time. I want to keep this car RELIABLE and not put boost into the danger zone. 250whp would put me right at this limit correct?
- Rev MS3 Basic
- FM DIY Kit
- GT2560R or Comp's oil-less alternative
- Deatschwerks injectors
- Wideband
- Ebay IC & Pipes
- FM Level 1 Clutch
I am sure there are some small things missing here or there but you get the basic ideas, here are my questions at the moment and any help would be much appreciated.
- How will my turbo perform/spool with a dumped downpipe?
- Is the internal wastegate sufficient for my needs?
- Will my air conditioning function with the MS3?
- Does anybody have experience with the oil-less turbo? Not a necessity but not having to worry about tapping the pan would be neat.
- Will doing all this make me love my car even more?

I really don't like DW injectors. I dont like DW in general either to be honest.

I'm curious where you're getting information on an "oil-less" turbo. There's the aerodyne, and no "competition" makes a kit around one as an alternative, and even if they did it's not oil-less.

You also might want to consider a coolant reroute and/or a new radiator, especially if you're keeping ac. If it's mostly on the street and your stock radiator isn't brown maybe you're fine. Mine would start to get hot when sitting in the florida heat before I removed the ac condenser, and that was without turbo.
But what do I know, I haven't even installed my turbo yet...

I'm presuming they do need water. I think if I was only going to run one or the other, it would be oil.

Thanks for the straight forward response Braineack, I have done a little research on injectors but what would you recommend from personal experience with my power goals?
From what I understand there is a grease fitting for servicing on the turbo and they are easily rebuilt, it is obviously cooled with coolant not just oil. I'm not stuck on this idea just thought it was kinda neat.

Either ID1000's or RX8 Yellow injectors (425cc I think). In my experience the yellows were good for around 220whp. If you don't have another car to drive to work I'd suggest you run the yellows and limit your power to what they'll flow. You really don't want to be pushing the limits of your motor/transmission if you don't have another vehicle available.
I ran a racing beat exhaust on my old '99 for a while, before and after I turbo'd it. That was a fantastic daily driver exhaust. Bought it used for cheap, sounded great, and the turbo still spooled fine on it. I'm sure you can find a cheap used aftermarket exhaust, if not the stock one will do in the mean time.

If you haven't noticed it yet, this forum believes in serious overkill. I subscribe to this belief. That being said:
-for your goals, your stock radiator will be fine for street use as long as it is in good shape. If it's not, then put a good radiator in it.
-You really won't need ID1000's, though they're the best and allow for plenty of headroom for when you want more power down the road. If you're really stopping at 250 ish whp, I'd go with the PNP GT500 injectors. They're cheaper and work just as well for your application.
-that oilless turbo looks really cool. that being said, I don't feel it's worth it for our application. Seems that for you, the FM no electronics kit (perhaps leaving out the intercooler as well, and you source that yourself) plus an MS3 is the hot ticket.
