Default TD04/TD05 fitted in place of T25/T28

I managed to fit a subaru td04 in place of my t25/t28 churbo. It is surprisingly easy, 3 long nuts welded on the t25 manifold and a 6mm adapter plate on the down-pipe side. I tried a td05 subaru turbo and it also fits. One thing I must do is to add a transition from square to round in inside the manifold and tack weld it place.

Both TD04/5 and T5/T28 turbos can be mounted between the same flanges with no adjustment of the maniold or down-pipe.

My reasoning for doing this is that Mitsubishi TD04 and TD05 turbos used on Subaru's have a reputation of being bullet proof and being a good match for MX5/Miata. Also they don't cost a lot second hand, much less than the cost of a churbo.

What is that, a BEGI S4 manifold? I'd much prefer it to be cast into the original flange and welded to the manifold over your method, which introduces three crackable failure points. An interesting and impressive DIY solution though. Kudos if it holds.

Thanks curly! I used a lot of filler wire and prepped undercut into the flange to get good penetration when attaching the nuts so hopefully they wont crack. Also the new studs are m10 as opposed to the original m8 which should help with durability.
I guess additional brackets could be attached between the the original m8 stud pattern to further clamp it but my feeling is that it will be good as is.

I've always wanted to replace my sequential twin turbo setup with another!

Ugly but flow should be better with the taper wedge tacked in.

You think that's really going to hold up?

and still I only see 2 turbos total in your pics, you reference 4 different ones...

yes, I really think it will hold but I have been wrong many times before

(The steel in the new bracket is thicker than the old one and is welded fully through. Also the length of the bracket is short and the forces will act mainly in shear on the mounting bolts. It is tough to budge the waste gate actuator.)

I talk about 3 turbos. TD04, TD05 and a t25/t28 Chineese one. (Or at least that is how the t25/t28 was described when I got it.) I will post a picture of the TD05 mounted later.

well it's either a t25 or a t28; but okay.

I just fear those nuts will just separate; was an adapter plate welded over the flange not an option?

I could add gussets between the flange and the edges of the nuts, effectively making it a flange. But I don't think it is needed as i trust my welds. Time will tell.

The way it worked out if I wanted to use a flange like this
then the t25/t28 down-pipe elbow would not fit within the td04 exhaust flange bolt pattern and I would end up making another down-pipe elbow.

I am on a budget and master of doing things the slack jawed fagg#tery hard way
Td04/5turbos off WRXs are easy to get second hand in Slovakia where as the 4 bolt mitsu are like rocking horse sh#t....

My next turbo build will be my second

That's retarded. They should make it so both turbos have the same downpipe location. I like your idea, just worry about the execution. Welds and turbo heat don't always play nice.

BTW, that brace you've made on the manifold itself will not work... If you want an s4 manifold to live, you have to brace it the way begi does it... And even then they report they get failures (and its really easy to not follow the instructions and not load the brace enough or too much, BTDT). Corky says the turbine flange moves outward almost 1/8th of an inch out when the manifold gets hot, and your brace keeps that from happening = extra stress.

Thanks ianferrel for the heads up! I may remove the manifold brace all together based on what you say. I have a u bolt pipe clamp similar to the begi design on my custom down-pipe. I guess a s shaped brace would have a bit of give in it, I will try something.

Just going out on a limb here...

The owner lives in Slovakia. I've seen Hostel. He can't be playing with a full deck.
