Hello MT!
I've had my 91 for about a year now and I'm ready to turbo it.
Here's a little background on what I've done so far: torsen t2 diff, race bushings, koni sport shocks, GC coilovers (550#f,350#r), FCM sport bumpstops, isc tophats (2"r,1.5"f), stainless steel brake lines, 94 spec brakes in front, 37mm koyo radiator and hoses, custom cat back borla dual exhaust, rb intake, 15x7 trm c1m et30 in front on Dunlop direzza dz101 195-50-15, 15x8.25 xxr 527 et0 in back on dz101's 205-50-15 with aukonexion fender flares. Interior is track ready with autopower roll bar, sparco seats, 5pt harnesses, and QR steering wheel.
I'm also have a jdm 1.6 I'm rebuilding with forged rods, low compression pistons, and a valve job.
On to my questions: what ecu is recommended when I turbo (looking ease of install and tune-ability(MS pnp, AEM, ??))and what direction should i go in terms of turbo kit or DIY? I'm looking to push around 200-250rwhp and have about $800 a month to spend, with $2500 already saved for the motor/turbo/ecu/cooling.

As far as engine management goes, you can't go wrong with MegaSquirt. I just recently got one myself, and it'll do anything you could ever want it to. Hit up Reverant here on the forums to get you a MS3 made

For the turbo, if you want a kit then either BEGi (Bell Engineering) or Flyin' Miata seem to be the way to go, and they both have kits that'll net the power you're looking for.
The decision on whether to go with a kit or DIY is all up to you... on one hand you'll get a kit that has everything you'll need all together and ready to go, and on the other hand you spend a little more time piecing things together yourself, but at the end spend a little less money. All a matter of price vs. convenience.

How difficult was the mega squirt install? And was it on OBD1? Did you have someone tune it for you or do it yourself?
If I were to build it myself, (Noob question following, sorry) what components would I need?
Ecu, turbo, exhaust manifold, wastegate, down pipe, intercooler??
Also is there any other upgrades I might have missed, necessary to handle the turbo?

First you will need the same size wheels and tires front and back. Second, stop building your 1.6 and get a 1.8 to build. After that you need to STFU and read.

Don't build the motor for 200WHP. Unless you have goals for over 250 in the future. Stock blocks have been known to hold 250 hp fine (although you really should be considering torque).

Megasquirt is best bang for buck. You can get it running on a conservative spark basemap + VE analyze live tuning (easy to do yourself) just fine. To get the max potential you will need a dyno tune.

These are simple, basic questions. Go read build threads. You will learn much more that way.
