I want to rotate the compressor in relation to the turbine housing side by about 10 degrees.

Do I need to loosen the 6 bolts and/or remove the big snap ring? Can this be accomplished on the car on surface rusted turbos?

These pictures are taken from a new spare spare turbo off the car.

depending on how your turbo is mounted, you're gonna want to make sure your oil drain is straight down. If it's not, you're going to have to loosen both sides most likely

Wrong. The manifold holds the turbine in only one orientation, and the 4 or 6 bolts (depending on the turbo) hold the CHRA in the correct (oil drain facing down) orientation. You'll want to just loosen the snap ring and rotate the compressor. It'll most likey require a hammer.

how can you say it's wrong if you have no information on how the manifold is oriented?

if it's top mounted, bottom mounted, etc. ? does this not matter?

when I put my turbo on for the first time on a begi log manifold, before clocking, the drain was pointing at the block. I had to rotate the chra by loosening both the compressor and turbine

Sorry, I guess I assumed it was already orientated correctly and he just wanted to tweak the compressor.

If it is indeed a "new" turbo for your setup, you will have to loosen the 6 bolts, pray you can rotate the CHRA easily, then orient your compressor housing.

I wanted to take this little ~ 10° angle out of the compressor side discharge tube and have it go straight up.

Thanks for the input but it looks like this will not be worth the amount of effort and profanity involved...these have been on for 6 years and I'm sure the snap-ring is very happy where it is and also buried.

For future reference, the trick with those snap rings is 12", 90 degree pliers from harbor freight. Cut a little notch on the inside the hold on to the snap ring, and it'll come out.
