Unhappy Unhappy Just Failed Smog 1994 Miata with e-manage Blue

just failed CA smog-only test.
The car had e-manage blue on it when I bought it used and had a valid smog cert. However, I could not pass this time.
My car is a ODB1 1994 Miata with an intake (carb-legal), exhaust and a Jackson Racing Cat.
The cars NOx output was too high. I had no "non-CARB equipment" issues.
Is there a way for me to disable e-manage for the test?

Any help will be appreciated.

The e-manage is not necessarily the reason your nox is too high. I have the same problem right now and my car is stock except for a JR header and cat-back exhaust. So far I've tried using that sea-foam stuff to clean some of the carbon out, checked and cleaned the egr valve and bought a new cat. The second time I tested it the nox was way higher than the first. Right now I'm waiting to hear back from the BAR to see if I qualify for assistance in paying for repairs.

Are you saying they check timing? I am hoping that letting the ECU take over instead of e-manage would return timing to more eco friendly values.

Why the heck are you using an emanage when you only have intake/exhaust?????

I'd take the emanage out, put in a stock cat, and try again.

Default oops its not the NOx that is high, but the HC

Looks like HydroCarbons at 15mph. The NOx is fine (makes sense since no extra heat). So I either have to clean stuff or change the amount of fuel supplied. Any idea how to remove EMB that makes it easy to reinstall?

To the question of why I have it - it was in the car when I bought it. And the car does have better throttle response then a stock one I drove.

You have unburnt gass eiting the engine. I would put new plugs & wires in. Then do a sea foam cleaning. This will also clean the cat out. Then retest.

As far as the emanage is concerned you should be able to unplug it if I am not mistaken. Do you even know where it is located.

Where are you located? Update you're info so some can help you.

Have a great day,
Jared

Thanks Jared. e-manage is under the seat. Disconnecting it from the harness does not allow the car to start.
Plug wires are in fairly new. Looks like its time for new plugs though. Looked up sea foam - I have just used an fuel injector cleaner (another brand) and currently added another cleaner for valves with a different tank of gas. Do you still recommend using sea foam cleanser? Or were you thinking that the into the manifold method is called for?

I was thinking of the manifold method as well as cleaning the throttle body. Also do an oil change before you go to have it tested again.

As far as removing the Emanage you will have to reconnect the wires that are now going to the Emanage and connect them to the OEM ECU.

Again update where you are at and what year your car is. We need info to help you.

Have a great day,
Jared

Ah, I thought I had that in the thread title - its a 1994 Miata, so an ODB1 1.8 motor.
I guess I also don't quite understand the wiring - afaik cpu is still connected, since eManage is a piggy back.
Trying to figure out how to disconnect the eManage system

Olderguy posted a way to modify a aftermarket stereo to mazda harness plug to make a jumper series that would allow you to remove the EMB and run the car with the remainder of the wiring in place. A buddy used it to help convert to an MS PnP.... worked well.

I passed a sniffer test with an EMB, wired in NA...

I doubt the EMB is the issue.... there's probably something else.....

Any codes on the ECU?

Since the EMB is thought to be working, just zero all the maps and set the injector correction to read 230 in 230 out. Send the new map to the main unit and you will be at whatever the car would be without EMB.

My high flow cat had died after 50K miles, you may have the same problem.

You are correct it was in the title. I am sorry about that. Brain fart. I would take olderguy's sugesting and try that as well.

Good Luck with the test. What were the other reading on hte smog test?they are all interrelated.

Have a great day,
Jared

Thanks everyone - found instructions on how to put a jumper on the harness to disconnect EMB.
I tried to connect the my laptop to the EMB using a Giff-Tech usb cable, but I don't have Giffs instruction on how to use the cable with the e-manage support tool. Got the e-manage software installed as well as Giff's USB drivers, but not sure of how to connect to the EMB.
Still, at least I know how to stop EMB overriding the ECU.
