Did you ever solve this problem? I just got and EMU and am getting ready to buy a laptop. Was wondering if I should stay away from Vista.

To tell if you figured this out. I'm hoping you did seeing as how my laptop runs vista and I plan on using a EMU.

Has this been a problem for any of the EMB users? Asking b/c I have an EMB waiting to go in and a Vista laptop... I REALLY don't want to have to reload it w/ WinXP.

guys this is an easy fix,

when you go to install the software right click on the folder/ program & select something along the lines of "install as" cant remember the exact term but its not hard to figure it out. Once you have done that it will ask you what operating system the software is made to suit & you simply choose xp. this will now install the program to work on vista. it works & i have been using vista for over a year with my software.

hope this helps

You running 64 bit Vista? That could be the issue. I run an EMB with a Serial -> USB adapter. Couldn't get **** to work (the adapter drivers for 64 bit were junk) in Vista 64 bit, so I run an XP 32 bit virutal machine and pass the device through to it. I can write out some instructions if anyone wants. It's all stuff you can download for free using bittorrent.

I am running Vista 32bit Basic and I have no problems... support tool works fine... just had to make sure in the device manager so set the serial adapter at COM1.

Oh boy...big post time. I wish I had a good enough internet connection to just host these files myself, but it would take 2 days and I don't trust my internets that much. That can be our last ditch effort.

-VMWare Workstation-
Alright, first you need to get hold of VMWare workstation. VMWare charges for it, so go here if you'd prefer the free option: VMware Workstation 6 5 1 Build 126130 Final Torrent - btjunkie. I didn't download this exact copy, but you'll probably have to enter a serial number that'll either be included in a .nfo file (open it with notepad) or a key generator afer you've installed it.

If you've never used bit torrent before, it's basically a peer to peer file sharing protocol that pulls data from many people at once if you're lucky...so potentially very fast downloads. I use this client: uTorrent.

-Windows XP-
First, lets try this download: Windows XP SP2 virtual machine for VMWARE Torrent - btjunkie

I'm downloading it myself to see if it's valid but it won't be done for a few hours. Hopefully it is, that'll make things a lot easier.

If this is no good, you'll need to get hold of a copy of Windows XP, be it either a disc or an image downloaded via bit torrent. Let's see if this download works first, though, because typing out instructions for all that will take a bit.

-The Virtual Machine-
So, assuming all is well up to this point, you should have VMWare installed and the XP VM extracted. Double click the .vmx file that was extracted with XP and it'll open VMWare and the screen will have a tab saying "Windows XP" or similar at the top, with Commands and Devices sections below.

Under commands, click Edit Virtual machine settings.
Click Add at the bottom of the screen and select USB Controller and click next and go through the wizard. When it's done. If you're using a serial port to connect your EMU, do these steps for Serial Port instead.

Go ahead and start the virtual machine (it's under the Commands section). This should boot up the XP virtual machine. Once it's booted, click on the menu bar VM -> Removable Devices and then make sure the Usb device or Serial device your EMU is connected with (make sure the EMU is plugged in and powered on, otherwise the OS can't see it) has a check mark by it. What this does is pass the device from the host OS to the virtual machine.

Now, I don't know how you have your setup files for the EMU (on a cd, file download), but you'll obviously need to get the support tool installed.

If it's on a cd, right click the cd drive icon in the bottom right part of the screen and click edit.
Select the Use Physical Drive option and pick the drive letter of your CD/DVD drive.

If your support tool install files are already on the computer, you could copy them to a thumb drive and then pass the thumb drive to the virtual machine (VM -> Removable Devices steps from earlier). This is the simplest way, but there are others. Also note the VM should have network/internet access so you can do things this way as well.

Wowza. I know these are kind of scatter brained and I skipped a lot of steps (I don't know how good you are with computers, don't want to type extra if I don't have to), so if you need any clarification, screens shots, etc let me know. If those downloads don't work out, we can try searching for some others or I can host the files I have, but hosting myself means they'll probably take a couple days to download and I'd hate to see the download fail halfway through or something.

So, the neat thing about this is you can take that virtual machine and put it on any computer that has pretty much any recent version of VMWare on it (aka the one you downloaded). So basically any computer that can run VMWare on it, you can use to run the Greddy software and tune the car.

Dont waste your time on VMWare, just use Virtualbox.org. It is free and faster that VMWare.
