Is the EMB working at all? I forget if its supposed to, but does the light come on when you start the car? Does the car still drive like it you had it tuned? In Windows, do you see the device at all in device manager? Are you using serial or an adapter from serial->usb? Try a different port on the PC if possible, if you're using an adapter, try a different one. I've never heard of an EMB just dying, though I'm sure it's possible, I bet your issue is on the PC side.

More than likely it's a com port issue. USB to serial adapters have a habit of changing com port numbers if used in different slots. Also it's possible that the adapter died.
I would be suprised if your emb isn't communicating, but still "working"....
You could try a different usb to serial adapter.... or swap emb cables with somebody....

I second what Dave said, the EMB can be flaky when using a usb-serial adapter cable. I find with mine, alot of the time it loses communication during real time logging and reseting the computer usually fixes it. However, sometimes even after a reset, it still won't talk to it.
Fire up my old pentium III 650 notebook with a dedicated serial port and use it instead and it has never once failed.
My bet is its just acting funny with your adapter and your emulated comm port in windows. Try and test it with the proper serial cable on an older laptop before panicking.

Another one...
Incredible, more than 500 dollars and the company has not resolved simple communication issues.
I got two laptops, one with XP and another one with Vista, the XP is useless no communication at all.
On the Vista, got to uninstall the Support tools, sometimes a few times, uninstall the com port drivers and maybe one out of five times it will read it.
Then it works well, if I take a one hour break, once I come back it is back to zero.
The E-Manage piggy back controls are a breeze to work on and very reliable, but the software communication to the hardware is VERY mediocre.
Now I am fishing on Craigslist for an old laptop, this is unreal. I am seriously selling it on CL, do not know yet...
