Cant wait Jeff! Hopefully we will be able to stop the boost creep! BTW , When he says it takes 5 seconds to hook up... he wasn't joking.

IN.. when proven they work of course. But good idea, price seems reasonable if they work well.

Hehe, not quite yet. I'm trying to get this rolling as fast as possible but unfortunately, this isn't my day job :(. I'll have audio samples by Monday and if all goes well, I'll start producing right after Christmas.

Default Sound Clips

Ok, so these clips didn't come out as clean as I would have liked. There seems to be a frequency cutoff that is being imposed by my laptop's mic in port. Towards the upper end of the rev range the recording degenerates into an unintelligible blur, however this DOES NOT happen when using headphones. I should also point out that this recording was taken using a clip to hold the mic to the engine at the intake manifold brace which is also adding in some noise. To counteract this, I'm going to test a bolt on connector at the block to eliminate any vibration noise. I will also be testing a piezo element ( the same thing they use in a knock sensor) in the next day or so to see if it provides an improvement over the mic I'm currently using.

I didn't really foresee this turning into an R&D thread for my idea, but there are some obvious shortcomings to my design. I'd rather do it once and offer a quality product than just half *** it. Updates to follow.

Mods: Any way to slightly increase the size for rar files? One of my sound clips comes in just under 2mb when compressed, but its still over by like 50 bytes.

Made some improvements to the design, the output is MUCH cleaner now.

Sample

I'd love to get some feedback from the people who showed interest in the idea. If people are still on board I can crank out a final version so you can see what you'd be getting.

Default Count me in and also a crazy suggestion

I'm absolutely in. I'd want to make it a permanent setup to a little jack in my dash that I could plug into anytime I was tuning had questions etc.

Here's the crazy idea... I don't remember where or when, but sometime in the last year I read that the perfect place to monitor for detination was in - as in INSIDE - the intake manifold. That makes sense to me.. A microphone mounted inside the manifold would be isolated from all the external noises of the engine but in a great position to hear knock. It would also be protected from the elements, etc. Unlike, an external pickup, it would be preferable to use an isolating mount rather than one which seeks to pick up sounds through the mount.

Don't ask me for suggestions on exactly how this could be accomplished - I don't know - but the concept seems very sound.

M.

I blew my clutch ->Christmas->New Years->Hell week at work (our ships leave on saturday). So, if all goes well, I'm going to put together a final product at some point next week... If I don't die first . Also, there is also someone local to me who has one of the fancy $500+ units from the UK and I'm going to try to check it out before I ship mine. I don't expect mine to be quite as nice ( at 10% of the price tag ) but I want to see just how it stacks up.
