Default What would you suggest for a 99 in an OBDII county staying NA

The more and more I think about it the more likely this car will stay NA. I've been thrasing it around way more than I ever did my 92. Yet lately with some of the "cheap" 99 factory motor builds i'm getting very curious about what kind of power I could make.

I already have an 01 manifold, fm mid-pipe (used for a steal), and a enthuza axel back. I was looking at getting the MSM/Euro intake cam and trying to source a square top euro/jdm intake manifold. I know 949 and other have seen 140 or so whp with such "inexpensive" mods. What ecu might you choose to alter the the spark/fuel map on the stock car as I would not be upping injectors plus need OBDII feedback.

I know the EMU is antiquated but it seems like a candidate as does the AEM FIC, but I can find the EMU for song and a dance. I know the new MSPNP that a few guys are building will be pnp for the 99 but i'm looking for a cheap easy solution as I do not want to go FI.

You should be able to pick up a cam cheap... I sold one recently for $50. That plus a pair of adjustable cam-gears should do you right.

I know Emilio was working on a source for JDM intake manifolds that don't have the VICS system.

For ECU, just get an Adaptronic and be done with it. You don't even have to go with a wideband initially if you need to do this on a budget. You can then ditch the entire stock intake and go with a DIY short-ram or whatever.

Everything I've read about the ATI damper says whatever it does, it works like magic... but it's not cheap.

Top quality fluids.
Torsen if not already.
Have you considered a shorter dif?

neither the adaptronic nor the diypnp are cheap.
also some of the other things you've already mentioned are not cheap.

All that money and for what, 140whp?

I don't know about your power goals and if you'll really be happy at such a puny power level man, but if that's enough for you and your goal is budget then why not pick up a used m45 or mp62 supercharger? Or a low boost turbo setup. EITHER way you won't spend much, if any, more money than your current proposed setup and have much more torque

That's what I was thinking. 6 psi, DIY mani, SR20T25 turbo, no IC, stock injectors, stock clutch, DIY MS, 150 WHP. Sell current parts on m.net and recoup some of the new investment. Done.

I think the OBD-II compliance part is why he's considering N/A.

A chipped/socketed Hondata style OEM ECU is a decent way to keep all factory OBD functions & sensors available to pass the scanner, while allowing tuning of ECM maps & functions... But that doesn't exist for Miatas.

Flyin' Miata offers a $580 "reflash" for NB's, but the company who's doing the tuning is Dynotronics, Inc. They were developing but never released a tuneable OEM ECU, but their reflash retains OBD-II compliance & has OK N/A gains over stock.

600 for 7hp and 10tq?

I don't understand the fuss people make over smog. I live in smog **** CA and have to do it every 2 years. Putting everything back to stock doesn't take more than a day of relaxed wrenching. To give up 100whp or so just because of that 1 day every 2 years is really missing out.

just my .02

its not that. Its just i dont mind wailing on the car in NA form. The car does not break, nor does the motor. If it was a track only car instead of my autox/dd maybe I would go FI again. There is an appeal to an OEM frankenstein using OEM QUALITY parts. The "puny" 140 whp is why I do not want to drop money on an expensive ECU this time around. Its not like I need the saftey margin when using so many stock parts. It would be more to smooth out the changes that would arise if I could get the MSM cam and the EURO/JDM intake manifold.

I might be interested in what DPtune/FM are offering on eproming the factory ecu as they are up near SATX iirc.

Lets not forget what a puny 95rwhp miata can do at a track.

Pitlab, I'm running the lumpier 99-05 exhaust cam for an intake cam (ExhIntake) with the OEM 99' ECU & it runs great.
Screw the JDM/Euro cam, not aggressive enough. http://solomiata.com/cams.html

Car also has 01 block (10.0 compression), RB header, 2.5" exhaust, & intake.
It's stronger than stock, but a proper map (DPTune, Megasquirt, FM etc) & higher redline could get this setup to 140 whp.

With a Euro/JDM intake mani I'm sure I could pass 140 whp, it chokes past 6,200 rpm.

But I'm with you that thrashing on your car while not breaking constantly is great... albeit slooooower.
