Default Reflash vs Standalone vs Piggyback

I have a '04 Miata LS with a stock 1.8L VVT engine. Performance mods include K&N CAI, RB header, FM hi-flow mid-pipe and RB power-pulse exhust. Car runs great but am looking for a few easy HP...who isn't. I really don't want to tear into the stock ECU wiring.

1) Has anyone used Dynotronics for a re-flash of stock ECU? They claim about 8-12 HP gain...cost ~$500.

2) Standalone EMS. MS3, AEM, Hydra, etc. Cost $700 and up. No PNP available for my '04 with VVT at this time.

3) Piggyback. Xede, AEM FI/C, eManage, etc. Cost $400 and up. PNP available (harness is expensive).

I don't plan on making any more power mods such as Forced-induction. Any thoughts or recommendations on this subject? Thanks

this place is pretty dedicated to f/i via turbo and you can't make any real power unless you run a standalone
you prob aren't going to have an answer spoon fed to you here on how to cheaply tune your car for a few bolt ons

If you have plans to make real power reflash is a waste of 500 bucks you can put towards a turbo kit.

I always find it amusing how people are looking for "cheap power mods" and always get the most expensive ones just because they are cheaper per mod.

Shanghai kit will give you about 50-70hp out of the box ~2k with a standalone. thats about 25-40 bucks per hp. Add an intercooler and injectors, you're up to 200 on the wheels.
A full exhaust, headers, CAI, reflash, and few other garbage mods add up to 1k easily for what? 10 hp total? Thats 100 bucks per hp.

You're not going to feel 10 hp however you'll definitely notice 50hp.

Dont remember if it was dynotronic or whatever but i remember asking for info on the stock ignition maps.. the guy was a complete *******. When he realized he wasnt going to bullshit me with his prep talk to sell me his 500 bucks scam *cough cough*. He decided to say pay me 250 bucks for a map or dont bother me again...last time we talked. The dude was also a sponsor on m.net.

Reverant offers an Enhanced MS2 that's PnP for your car (and controls the VVT properly).

It might have been TDR. No, not Track Dog Racing, but Tuning Done Right.

This is an example of the awesome customer support and tune you get from TDR's reflashes:

Thanks for the advice.

I've seen his posts. Anyone out there personally bought one of his MS2 packages?

No, nobody has ever done that. It's not like there was an entire thread created by another noob just to ask that.

Why don't you start reading, PhilM, before you are banned. Try "advanced search -> sort by relevancy" and/or google search with the site name in the search.

I thought it was TrackDogRacing, and based on their rep thought it was surprising they did such shoddy work.

based on that I guess they're very mad.

Irony of the company name is amazing.

There is a post right now on my local forum of a guy who went dynotronics, I remember his request for info. I said get a megasquirt, he said but what about "butt dyno/reflash/smog legal".

He now has a 5000 word post about how the guy pretty much took his ecu, waved his hand behind a curtain, and took his money. The first ECU he sent was DOA when he got it back. The second ECU only adjusted the timing randomly, no other adjustments to fuel, etc. To top it off the customer service is great until he actually deposits your money, then its just the cold shoulder.
