Default lame 1.6 question...

my friend has a 92 that is all kinds of jacked up. compression sucks, knocks, no power... all kinds of good stuff. he just wants to swap another 1.6 in. he sourced one for $100, and i took a look at it, doesnt seem too bad, just needs a headgasket (all the seller knew about it, and rusty rear intake-side of block confirms). but the seller doesnt know what year it is out of.

are there any tell tale signs of a SNC 1.6? i searched around, couldnt find anything, and cant find any stickies.

he is already on the road to fail, but the SNC would be extra fail...

Are you sure it was the HG and not the cursed water plug leaking back there?

Do not buy the engine without inspecting the crank keyway for damage, no matter what year. A SNC isn't the kiss of death if the keyway is good. Just take preventative measures before using it.

The crank pulley for the SNC looks different than the LNC. The SNC only has 4 slots in the pulley. Good pix on miata.net (there's an entire page on the SNC issue).

I run the SNC on my '90 (I am fail). I just keep an eye on things and .

ill help him with it, and laugh about it later.

Thanks everyone! ill check over everything... especially the keyway... and toss that beast in to get him down the road.

SNC isn't a guaranteed ZOMG FAEL issue, but I wouldn't buy another one. I made sure my new motor was LNC.

Too bad you're far away, I would have probably just given you my old motor.

Pics of fingerless friend???

If a broke *** 1.6 is worth a hundred, I have a goldmine here with 2 perfectly good low mileage ones.

For $100 that 1.6 better be perfect.

With a headgasket problem, you could find a 1.8 for around that price you would be paying for the 1.6. Idk where you are lookin to buy that 1.6 but there is no way you should be paying that price.....just saying....
