Default Dodge neon coil pack in 97 miata

Doge Neon Coil Install

Why I am doing this ... cause its different, cheap and has a hotter spark and the stock coil pack has died on me so why not do something different.

Has anybody here attempted this (neon coil) and how to wire it up?

12v to center pin, 2-3 trigger to left side and 1-4 to right is what I believe I need to do but I am nervous about it.

I've heard of this before. I feel like its one of those common mods that people who dont post on the internet do.

MCarp's shocking neon coil upgrade - MX-5 Miata Forum

welcome to the internet.

My question to you is: what are you going to use as an ignitor?

Ignitor? Ahhhhhh. Im guessing since you've asked me that its not built into the Neon Coil pack. Ideas? Ive never wrenched on anything before my Miata so Im learning as I go and unfortunately for me I only learn the hard way. I am willing to pass on any knowledge I gain through the process tho.

As far as I can tell the neon coil pack is just like the 97 Miata pack and pulls the signal to fire direct from ecu and has the igniter built in. If Im wrong please correct me.

MCarp's is a 1.6 and thus slightly different from my 1.8, but that's what I am trying to accomplish. I will give detailed instructions with pics if I get it to work.

The igniter is built into the neon ECU, so it wouldn't work on a 94-97 miata without an external igniter like the 91-93

Thankyou for the clarification on this. Now I must find an igniter and figure how to wire it up.

AEM 4 Channel Coil Driver

or you just get a replacement coilpack for $30. or you upgrade to COPs that have built in ignitors, or a better coil setup like the LS coils.

As I am not familiar with the 91-93 do I need an igniter for each bank. i.e. one for 4/1 and one for 2/3.

12v line to each igniter, trigger from ecu 4/1 to one igniter and trigger from ecu 2/3 to other igniter. Then, 4/1 igniter to right side pin of coil and 2/3 igniter to left side of coil and 12v to center pin?

I was looking at the wiring diagram for the AEM coil driver. Im not sure it would be adaptable to the neon coil as the neon coil does not have any negative terminals. But Im not the brightest leaf on the tree sooooo.

COP's are cool, but I have made a bracket and 8.5mm plug wires to fit the neon coil pack plus I just like to be different.

I believe that's normal; the negative being the trigger.

here's a cheaper solution of pretty much the same thing: QuadSpark Four Channel Ignition Module DIYAutoTune.com
and a coil that works with it: IGN-4 Four Tower Wasted Spark Coil DIYAutoTune.com

unsure about running them on a stock ecu...but then again, im unsure about ever running a stock ecu.

Sweet. the quadspark looks to be just what I need, thx.

If I blow the stock ecu during this process then Ill have a little more leverage to get a megasquirt, Ide just be without my toy for the rest of the autocross season.

I'd email websales@diyautotune.com and see what their thoughts on using it with the stock ECU are.

I'm fairly certain i've seen an NA8 do this with the MSD aftermarket Neon unit, with some sort of MSD "brain" running the whole shebang...

What they said is that there would be no way to control the dwell time. So basically to try this without a msd or other controler is not a good idea. While I may get it to work, it would be untunable.

I have got my answer and I have this forum to thank.

Thanks for your help.

I will save my money and .... Im not sure what, but I need more power even if it is only 1hp at a time.

If you want real performance mods (outside of forced induction) buy a $3K susension.

n/a power mods are a complete and utter waste of money.
