Gotta make some slider bars or something to protect the engine.

The recent GRM article loved the J-Series in a Miata, with full-on journalist speak about how the nature of the car was unblemished and ****. Wine-and-cheesers need that sort of thing. I heard a number of $3500 bounced around in that article for the kit IIRC.

if its the same kit from this thread they are going to make bank. No way this **** costs more than 10$ for them to build.

The last time I talked engine swaps with Shawn Church, his eyes lit up when HE brought up the J series engines. The sand rail guys get 450whp with a single turbo and stock internals, and 250-275whp NA with a stock ECU that's had the immobilizer chopped out of it. A quick check of the Acura forums shows all sorts of Franken swaps with J37 cranks, hi-comp pistons and wilder cams. Oh, and Honda.

I bet the weight would actually be LESS than a turbo or Rotrex car, with engine weight more mass-centralized. And last I saw that they made a new oil pan that looks less like an asphalt anchor.

I like the concept. But then again I'm a glutton for punishment.

good luck getting the stock trans to live behind anything over 270hp.

You sound like the perfect candidate to develop a swap kit for the J. With engine mounts.

And that uses a non-miata tranny. Lakewood makes a J to tko bellhousing.

Seriously, do you think the Lakewood housings are that much heavier than stock? For example, the T5 trans is only 75lbs but I don't know if that includes the housing or not. If it does, then that's Miata territory weight for a trans than can take 330wtq. That would be enough for a built J36, and not too much of a weight penalty.

Are we talking about T5 or TKO? T5 are nice but you have to basically DIY it to get the gear ratios you want. The lakewood bellhousing doesn't fit any T5 transmissions, if I recall.

TKO is like 90-100lbs without the bellhousing. It looked like the best option to me, especially with the lakewood bellhousing. But then I read a bunch of posts regarding shift problems at high rpm and kind of gave up on the idea.

At this point the transmission I'm interested the most is the BMW E39/E46 6-speed manual (Getrag 420G). It's rated at 370ft/lbs, weights 100lbs, can be had for reasonable price and has good gear ratios. The issues is that its short (probably hard to mate to PPF) and has a flange on the output shaft, instead of a spline, requiring a custom drive shaft (since you can't use a slip yoke). And of course, no easy way to mate it to any engine.

edit: to answer your question, I'd expect a miata-sized aluminum bellhousing to weigh like 10lbs.

I thought for a second that the T5 and the TKO had the same bolt pattern. This is all bench racing anyway. Although the LFX and the J35 are interesting options, they'd need gearing that supported the lower rpm' sand higher torque of the engines.

TKO has "muncie 4 speed" pattern, which is only same as early Chevy T5 transmissions. Most T5 are ford pattern.
