Default how many miles on your boosted engine

ok i have kind of a dilema i really want to boost my car but it has 132,000 miles on it. i don't want to make crazy power like 180-190 rwhp for now but i've only put about 4000 of theese miles on it so i don't know how it was treated most of it it's life. it's a 94 a package. i was thinking of the begi s kit this year the intercooler next year then a full engine build the year after. if i get a chance this year i'm going to try do a compression test and see some numbers. i will say that it doesn't burn any oil at all and seems to still pull strong.

You are screwed. Mainly because you probably have a broken shift key.

Where are you located? It isn't in your details like everybody else.

Don't wait to do the intercooler. Heat is the enemy.

If it takes you seven months to do a compression test, then I'd strongly advise against installing a turbo.

Seriously though, if it blows good numbers, that's about all you can ask. Buy the Bell kit with the intercooler, install it, and forget about doing an engine build. If for some reason the motor does give out, just buy another one from a junker, which will cost about one-quarter of doing a "build." Spend the extra money on a clutch, a wideband O2 sensor, a proper exhaust, a megasquirt, big injectors, water injection, good tires, a suspension build, a complete homebrewing setup with corny-keg and a fridge conversion, maybe a weekend in Vegas, etc.

And FWIW, 180-190 HP isn't "crazy power." In fact, it's kind of on the low side.

Well, like, if he would use the damn comma and, like, drop the "like", I think he would have made his point.

Save a like and add two commas, save two keystrokes.

my car has a 100,000 turbocharged miles on it. only bad thing is, my harness is hard and brittle from the heat. some harness plugs have been replaced and are needing to be replaced again. controlling the extra heat will help you run trouble free for many more miles.

Yea I think he was going for..

"I don't want to make crazy power, just 180-190rwhp for now."

But I could be horribly wrong. Either way there are tons of high mileage Miatas that are turbo... I wouldn't worry about it, do a compression test and if it is good turbo it and don't look back.

I turboed mine at 130k. It lasted 28,000 miles of moronic abuse at 200-220whp. Overboost, detonation, 14 track days, etc. It compression tested perfectly right up until the day it spit a rod through the side of the block.

If it tests fine, boost it.

172k The motor had keyway failure at 120k, and while the motor was apart for a new crank we did a basic rebuild. Boosted since around 160k.

I don't really get to contribute much to these threads either, as my '92 has about 65,000 miles on it. That's 65,000 total, not 65,000 since turbo.

I'm one of those weirdos who always choses to live in a location that doesn't require me to commute an hour each way to work and back.

Paul turbo'd his daily at 250k and made 230rwhp. He recently sold it with like 290k on it. Yea, at 130k you're definitely screwed, there's no way it'll hold up.
